Gorton No 5 Steam vent hiss constantly.

as far as it will go. If you have the little gray Honeywell pressuretrol, set the pointer on the cut-in scale to 0.5 PSI. This will make the burner cut off at 1.5 PSI and back on at 0.5 . You don't need any more pressure to make the system work.

If the Gortons are new, try boiling them in vinegar. They may just be dirty.

Gorton No 5 Steam vent hiss constantly.

One pipe steam system with main vents in place.

I have two 10 section 4 tube raditors (Newer burnham made) that originally had maid of mist no 2 vents on them. They use to hiss like crazy.I called in a plumber who replcaed those vents with a gorton No 5.He showed me the small air hole in the Gorton and mentioned that I just need No 5 vents of better quality. After he replced them, the hiss vent away for a few weeks.Last few nights it came back. The vents are hissing constantly again.I dont know what is wrong.

I replaced a third radiator of same size with a veri vent. That vent is as quite as it could be.All the radiators in question are on the second fllor of the house.

Downstairs all raditors are the old column type n have different type of vents, those vents are long and thin and NOT round. These vents hiss for a few seconds and than shut off. They DO nOT constanly and loudly hiss.

I am wondering what is wrong with the radiators in questions. And what as a last resort shall I do.

    Ken,Steamhead please help..

    Thank you very much.

    Are

    your mains vented properly?

If all of the system air is being pushed out of the small rad vents, I am not surprised by this.

Is your system running on 2 pounds (or less) of pressure?

Gorton's website indicates that a No.5 radiator vent should be located in a warmer room located close the boiler. From what I noticed about the Gorton Website, there are various radiator vents for cold rooms and hot rooms, near boiler and far away from the boiler. The main vents they sell seem to be broken down by near and far from the boiler, and warm side and cold side of the house locations. This would seem to imply that you should not mix and match different types of vents (radiators and mains in a steam system.

    vent hissing

wonder if the steam is dirty, clogging up the new vent?
  • Do the vents still hiss

when the radiators are fully heated?

Yes they his after getting completely hot.
The bioler pressure is set to cut in at 2 psi and cut out 3.

These radiators are on the second floor they are the newer type and r smaller than the old column types on the first floor.

One of this raidiator is clost toeh boiler and the other if farthest away.

Any help wil be highly appreciated. As mentioned i replaced the dole bents with gorton hoping it will make a difference.

    Hissss.....

If it's hissing after the vent has heated too hot to touch, the vent is bad and should be replaced. It could have some mung (that's a technical term) on the seat that is keeping it from closing properly.
