Service call came in as: Smelly water coming out of boiler. Found Standing pilot, 4 year old boiler with the following symptoms: Pressure gauge reading 34 psi. no water in expansion tank (non-bladder type). relief valve dripping very little water but a small amount of rancid smelling "gas" coming out with the water. As I was checking out symptoms, the relief valve popped and discharged water/gas mixture on floor, which preceeded to IGNITE from the standing pilot on boiler. Yes,ignite! A small thump and blue flame surrounded the boiler. As I stared in disbelief, it happened again, Whooompf, blue flame, holy SH@$!!!. I extinguished the pilot flame, ventilated the basement and went outside to Breath fresh air. Dizzy and in amazement, I went to my truck, got out my garden hose, hooked it up to the drain valve on the expansion tank, and vented the "gas" out of the system into the back yard. It took about 2 minutes to discharge all the gas out of the system with a 5/8" garden hose opened all the way!!! Thats alot of gas!!

The smell of the gas reminded me of methane (sewer gas).

I drained the entire system, not much water in the system. filled and bled as needed. Holding 14 psi for 2 days now with no increase.

What the heck is going on?
