Smith 28 install
Another RUSH job. The building owner left these people without heat and hot water for over a month.
Then it became MY problem to get it done ASAP.
Worked mostly out of the truck again.
Over 500 dollars in parking tickets.
One of the dirtiest removals I've seen.
Constant barrage of "undesirables" asking if we had any brass or copper, or "work".
Came out to find the truck's rear door lock broken so we could not open the truck. Can't fool me, I know they don't want "in" to the truck, they want to steal the tools and equipment we leave in the basement when we leave. Got into the truck, removed the lock assembly, took it to a locksmith for a new cylinder and back on the job in 1 hour flat.
One of the WORST neighborhoods I have EVER worked in. And I have worked in places where you heard gunfire and didn't even flinch.
I left the pictures big, so you could FEEL the sooty mess.0 -

Much nicer job
than that owner deserved, Al. I hope you are pleased, I sure would be!
Harlem?
I would hope the Mayor would fix the tickets for you given that you were giving heat to some constituents. Or at least maybe you can pass those on? My word, meter maids eat their young.
What a difference in the plant! Beautiful work; hope it is under lock and key.0 -

I like that bx/conduit technique I am going to have to use that move very nice. What is the oil line run in?
I am in Philly and I know the bad area deal it just sucks. Good Luck

Conduit
The BX in conduit tecnique makes it look neater and facillitates servicing the boiler. It can be easily removed to allow jacket panels to come off.
The oil lines are run in 3/4" (or 1") Greenfield to appease the inspectors/code.

Wow
Hey-that's one of mine! Not too many Smiths make the pages here, and I am glad to see one. Nice work, Al. They will certainly be happy with their oil bill now as well- The old Mills boilers were tanks, but weren't quite as efficient as the 28s or the 28HEs.0 -
Guy
And I'm hearing there are some even better things to come.

Just looking for a quick opportunity
That does not sound fair, you're performing an emergency boiler transplant and while you have open tools everywhere, there are enough meter maids to fine you $500.00 but no one to deal with all the criminals and outlaws breaking your truck and stealing your stuff.
For the price of a boiler permit, it should seem reasonably fair for you to get some convenient parking privileges - new boilers maintain property values. The soot doesn't disgust me, the taxing crime does.
The nerve of the bunch, to ask for your copper scrap for free, probably expecting you to sort it out while not even offering to take away the trash, or keep an eye on the street, or keep on feeding the meter.
The good guy in this story is the one who installed the good boiler - hands down. Nice job, Al, I'm proud of you, and thanks for sharing the pictures.

Staying with SMITH. Old H. B. is smiling down on you Al.
Was that an old 34 or a 44??
To bad. It seems like you need to hire a Guard to watch the trucks. Nice job. Probably better than they deserved.
Those rusty nipples usually eat sawzall blades. I usually use a torch "ready for the popcorn sound?" Of course in those old places you don't wanna burn it down.

Sorry to see the old girl go.
I really like those old Mills boilers. The drums, the rusty nipples...
That old 34 Mills succumbed to some sort of above-the-waterline corrosion (chlorides? After 98 years?) in one section. Every other section, I can assure you, had its full measure of cast iron, and then some.
My Dad said it was a 340 Mills. The front door said 34. I think the designation has something to do with the original intended fuel. This one still had the lower coal damper on the left side.

Beautiful work
in such adverse conditions Al . Broken locks , tickets , big pork chop sections . All in a rush too ? Amazing .
How do you keep this pace up ? I thought we were installing at a fast clip , but you're moving like we're stuck in the mud .0 -
Thanks Christian

The Pace.
If there is a boiler that needs to be done for this particular oil company, I will jump through hoops to get it done. They work around MY price for install, they are pure professionals, and their customers, for the most part, are really good people. Some of them have been with them for over 60 years. The service dept doesn't have any idiots, and they actually CLEAN boilers.
My family has dealt with them for GENERATIONS.
They keep us as busy as they can. But they understand we have our own clientele and will assist in rescheduling as needed. So far, a win/win.
If we don't have 3 large boilers a month, and at least two V8s a week, I feel like I'm missing something. Sure, its nice to do a big radiant job, or snowmelt systems, mod/cons, gravity conversions, big controls troubleshooting, etc. But I really LOVE installing boilers.

Gee Al, you coulda saved it Haha. I think the smith 3500 sections will fit if they are intermediate sections. If I remember right if the front or back go bad you have to replace the front doors or the rear smokehood but they got there money's worth and then some. You can always disconnect and plug a leaky section and let it burn. We used to take the drums off and re nipple them all the time (a nasty job)
They had several models 34, 340, 340L 'low set' which were all basiclly the same. Sine I'm located about 12 miles from Westfield this area was loaded with Smiths. 30 years ago you never saw a boiler that wasn't a smith (well, almost)they had all the school business and all the engineers.

I ABSOLUTELY ......LOVE 28's.....
