old boiler

Interesting. Maybe all of that volume of cold water makes you think it is cooler? Not clear on that. Time to sit back and watch that one...
The connection between the S & R is probably a bypass installed so that the boiler circuit flow does not have as much impact on the gravity side of things (if indeed it is still active as a gravity system) and vice-versa. You have a low mass boiler connected to a high mass system so the bleed in rate of water has to be controlled. Too high through the boiler and it can condense, too low and it can over heat.

just replaced expansion tank on two year old boiler ,how do i know it is a gravity coverted system and why would the supply and return be connected with ball valve(closed).customer complaint radiatiors are not hot like they used to be (before boiler installed) ,boiler is wired when thermastat closes everything comes on ,house warms up before boiler does ,teledyne lars with aquastat .thinking about adding switching relay and let boiler cycle off aquastat ,will have to add flowcheck none,.what do you think .Does teledyne lars have website to check wiring0 -
copper supply pipe is warm to touch ,does not get hotter 1 1/4 off boiler copper into 2 inch steel pipe ,travel arond perimeter and branches off into raiators at 1 1/4 .this was old coal fired heating system according to homeowner.Any ideas .I have thought of adding cic flowcheck on supply ,not familar with these old systems.0 -
If all else fails....
READ THE INSTALL MANUAL!!!!!
Trust me on this point, the manufacturer has had more time to try and reject any and ALL hair brained piping schemes for their units. The one(s) posted in the INSTALL MANUAL are the best ones that they have come up with. They will make the unit work the way it was intended to, if it's installed the way THEY say.
Been there, done that and learned the hard way more than once. Please believe me. I have no reason to lie to you. Please try to email Teledyne and get a manual for your particular unit. Chris0 -
will consult manual ,did not install ,original installer collected money and ran ,wish i had my camera,Just checked online they do want by pass installed to protect from condensation issue.installed had valve closed0 -
