Buderus & gravity hot water

trying to reduce fuel bills. The ustairs bedrooms will not be used much in the winter. Right now the property is "seasonal" lots of use in the summer only some in the winter...and the only area that will see use would be the DR/entry area...right now the second floor overheats a lot...even though the t-stat in the DR is set on 62F....kpc

I am doing a...
proposal for a large gravity hot water conversion...oil is the fuel of choice and I am looking to use a 215-7 boiler w/ a Logamatic...should I still do a primary /sec. loop for the zoning? I have done a job recently that had a lot of cast iron radiation and Buderus said that it was not needed...any thoughts? kpc

Buderus
Kevin, I work in an area which might have the biggest population of Buderus, very common boiler here for over 20 years. So, I have the experience. That being said, I know what they say, but they need boiler protection against condensation like any other or they will scale, period.IMHO.Now, I do agree that they have a good internal design as far as thermal shock protection, but that's not what I'm concerned with.I am also a believer that a primary -sec. set-up works more efficiently in the long run, anyway.

A bypass at a minimum but I prefer primary secondary myself on Gravity conversion

I will figure it in....kpc

4 way
I like a 4 way with bypass. The ESBE 4ways are inexpensive and you get the mixing valve card for the 2107 control.
Think about revalving the existing radiators with TRV's when the system is dry. It makes a big difference in comfort.

question
Why would you need to do primary/secondary if the boiler has its thermostream and the Logamatic R2107?

that is why....
I am asking. There is a lot of water in the system...the existing Weil-Mcl 76 boiler is 16 yrs old, shows signs of flue gas condensation and gobbles 3000 gal/yr of oil. It has no circ. still. I do plan on usig trv on the second floor to help balance the system...kpc

question
How are you going to run the system? With the room sensor you could have a constant circ system. With all the water in that system, the 2107 would keep the system around 100 deg. The delta T in the boiler would be very low and with the antishock boiler, 113 condesate protection........Is the primary secondary going to do anything for the system?
Buderus needs the water to flow though the boiler to know how hot it is.....(without the 241 card) I agree a bypass is needed on the g115 and is a good thing for any boiler but how much will it improve things? How do you see this improvment?0 -
I have been asking....
around and one engineer has said that he has seen problems w/ using the Logamatic with gravity conversions. He sugested a Tekmar 260 instead. Anyone else have or heard of issues w/2107 and gravity conversions...kpc

I have a gravity conversion with the G215/4 and R2107 and room sensor. No problems at all. In fact, constant circulation seems to work exceptionally well with high mass because it is better able to tightly anticipate the BTUs needed to heat all that water up. On Joe Kennard's advice, I have the "room comp" dialed up to 18 (the highest setting) in order to give the room sensor the greatest contol over indoor reset. It works like a charm. My home is always perfectly comfortable and so far appears to be saving fuel. How much fuel I'm not sure until I go through a full heating season. However, so far it looks on track for a 5-year ROI.0
