The new Glenn Hughes CD.......................................

what if?....

I think now he'd kinda be like Al Dimeola or in that vein

I read an interview once with some DP, Lord and Paice I think, they were saying Tommy would routinely pass out, it became normal for the band to lay him on a bed and let him sleep it off, and then on that last tour with his band he didn't wake up

listen up boys and girls, if you think someone needs an ambulance call
good case in point is John Bonham, drummer for LedZep had the world to live for

on his 30th birthday the band was partying at Pages, he did 30 shots of Vodka in a row, 1 for each year of his life, passed out , they put him in bed ON HIS BACK, never never put anyone on their back, he threw up and drowned in his own vomit.

    You're The Man!

I put Coverdale first, Hughes second on the all time list. Saw The- Burn, Stormbringer and the Come Taste The Band Tours. All the new stuff with Iommi freaking rocks. If the new one is anything like the others it will kill. Look for Glenn Hughes Live in Japan, Amazing, opens with Burn. I think you are putting that question out to a very select group. The Sabbath CD called Seventh Star w/Hughes is probably the best Sabbath Album ever...

    Glenn Hughes ...................................................

Hails from Cannock, England. Formed Trapeze in the late 1960s - power trio with Glenn on Bass and Vocals, Dave Holland (who achieved fame in the 80s with Judas Priest) sat behind the kit, and Mel Galley played the six string. Trapeze had a few huge hits on the hard rock/funk scene including Medusa. When Ian Gillan left Deep Purple, bassist Roger Glover left as well leaving a void on lead vocals and bass duties, respectively. Coverdale was hired AFTER Glenn. In the initial jam sessions, Glenn was fulfilling the vocal roles as well. FRom North Yorkshire came David Coverdale. He became lead vocalist although a rivalry existed from that day on. After Ritchie Blackmore left to form Rainbow with Ronnie James Dio, Glenn pursued countless solo endeavors including a stint in 1986 with Black Sabbath. Although Glenn is not a "pop star" he is very well known and respected within the music biz for his outstanding vocal range which runs the gamut form an Ozzy howl to a Barry Gibb falsetto....whilst laying down great bass lines on his Fender Precision. He is one of my musicsal soulmates. Anyhow, he just cut an album with Tony Iommi from Sabbath and a tour may already be on the way. As much as I love the Cream.....I would still rather see Glenn Live before I close my eyes. Mad Dog

    I love David very much..........................................

However, Glenn has more overall talent and has had a fairly consistent run of 35 years in the biz. He is still highly sought after for his session work on bass and vocals. Glenn was one of the original bass virtuosos. His voice and range are far superior. David....if you are listening,,,I'm sorry, but its true. I'll buy you a cockney scotch when we meet again. Mad Dog

    HAHAHAHEEEE

Saw Purple in 71, 73, 74, 75 & 04, saw Whitesnake in 79 (before the hair band days, more blues rock). Glenn Hughes' bass playing is every good as his singing. We were 2nd row center in front of Bolin, Hughes was to his left. Listen to Bolin's work on I Need Love, from Come Taste The Band, filthy bass & guitar & drums (don't forget Ian Paice). Oh, saw Bolin w/James Gang. Was absolutely scary. hahahaha heehheheheh waaaaa... Did I mention I have all the Trapeze cd,s (Listen to Jury & Seafull) hahahaha heheheh

    freakin me out

I didn't think I'd ever hear anyone saying what I was thinking, Although most people are unaware of the Come Taste the Band era I thought it was one of DP's best, Comin Home is great, most screamin in that era was Hughes and not Coverdale, on Burn the high parts are Hughes, the Sabbath stint with Hughes is also great plus Eric Singer is a screamin drummer.

If you really like Tommy Bolins guitar work check him out on Billy Cobhams Spectrum CD, before DP, before too wasted on drugs, a shame he died.

Check out DP's latest Bananas, I'd rate their albums from best down as Machine Head, Perfect Strangers, Made in Japan, Bananas, Come Taste the Band, Burn, House of Blue Light

Has anyone seen Blue Oyster Cult with their new drummer and bass player?? check out their newer stuff

and if you like hard rock check out The Lizards, Bobby Rondinellis drumming with them, they are out of L.I., their latest Cold Blooded Kings is great.

    teaser

    is a great album

Steve Morse is the guitarist for DP now and Don Airey is the keyboardist who plays alot like Lord who retired a couple of years back.

It's too bad Gillan and Blackmore can't get along. I know people who have met or worked with Blackmore and he is apparently a trip, bipolar or something.

Didn't Hughes do something with Thin Lizzy a while back?? Or maybe he played at the Phil Linot tribute?? Seems like I remember hearing something about that.

I'll look for Hughes new CD, always liked him.

    Ever hear of Captain Beyond??

post 60's trip band, 1st Supergroup next to Humble Pie

    from http://www.music.msn.com/artist/?artist=16082828
Captain Beyond was a rock group formed in Los Angeles in 1972 by ex-members of other prominent groups. Singer Rod Evans (b. January 19, 1947, Slough, Berkshire, England) had been with Deep Purple; drummer Bobby Caldwell had worked with Johnny Winter; and guitarist Larry Rheinhart (b. July 7, 1948, Florida) and Lee Dorman (b. September 15, 1945, St. Louis, MO) had been in Iron Butterfly. This lineup made their self-titled debut album for the Southern rock label Capricorn in 1972, after which Caldwell was replaced by Marty Rodriguez for their second album, Sufficiently Breathless (1973). Captain Beyond became inactive following the departure of Evans, but it was reorganized in 1976. Caldwell returned, and Willy Daffern was added as vocalist for Captain Beyond's third album, Dawn Explosion (1977), recorded for Warner Bros. Dawn Explosion was Captain Beyond's final effort. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide

    Who hasn't?

Captain Beyond 1st/Man with the out stretched hand is a classic. Dawn Explosion was OK, but Rod Evans had left. I like Rod better than Gillan. To me Coverdale/Hughes is Purple. Saw the Machine Head & Who Do We Think We Are and Banana's Tours, Gillan has lost it.

Nothing Compared to the Come Taste the Band Tour, 2nd row and running on high octane. Mistreated and Getting Tighter live takes years off your life...

    LET ME ASK YOU THIS

    sorry didn't mean to scream,

I feel that Humble Pie's "Rockin the Filmore" was the most influential album in rock. Many many bands changed their sound to copy it. With Frampton they were untouchable. Too bad he didn't stay, would you agree??

    also some trivia for friday

I found something by accident surfing, when Page was putting together Led Zep he was trying out a lot of singers, he wanted Steve Marriot from Humble, Humbles manager found out and told Page that if he took Steve he would break his fingers significantly so that he would never play guitar again, soooo after thinking for about .3 seconds page settled on Plant.

Also Led Zep originally came about from Moon, Keith had a fight with Pete and he and Entwhistle where going to start another band, and call it Led Zep

didn't happen but jimmy kept the name
I often wonder though what would have happened if L3ed Zep had been

    Page - guitars

    Steve Marriot - vocals

    John Entwhistle - bass

    Keith Moon - drums

I belive the name came out because some one asked Moon what he thought of Paiges new band " I think it wil go over like a lead ballon " was the answer.

Hey Maddog just a question ... Don't these guys all add to the Moral Decay of the country with all thier drug use ... or was that just for older hippies guys :)

Very familar. Many Purple Fans despised NOT only Coverdale's arrival, but Glenn's funk influences. I love all Purple Line ups, All rainbow lineups, and all Sabbath Line ups. Unlike chumps like Van Halen, Blackmore and Iommi were ALWAYs about the music - not the money. They would NEVER put a Gary Cherone in there. Owed to "G" Mad Dog

Still hurtin over that huh? Lennon's masculinity was MoreThan in question...weekends with Eppy in the mountains........ring a bell. Maybe its just me, but I prefer music that KICKS ---. Not namby pamby, kumbaya ballads that John spewed out in the last few years. Helter skelter....JOhn at his best. I'd take Bonzo on acid over John Lennon straight anyday - any situation. no dice- man

    O.K.

Then its not a drug thing its more to do with sexual preference ? Just want to be clear.

You don't have to like his music Matt, I do, but you mentioned his adding to the cultural rot of society.

Music is an individually, Ya like what Ya like. You was still a young pup when I first heard Iron Man and Faries Wear Boots ( wait is that a cultural thing ? ). I moved on to other styles of music but still enjoy a full rock style playing. I tend to got to Jimi for cranking guiter.

I not suprised by your liking loud guiters ( this one goes to eleven ! ). Full volume seems to your style :).

One of you guys mentioned Super Groups, thie first I remember was Super Sessions with Steven Stills and Al Kooper. I'll have to check the inter-net for the others ... I'll be back. Mike Bloomfield .. How could I forget. I heard this on an 8 track.

Hey Matt, not stinging at all, that would mean it hurt. I got big shouldes like I told Hunt. Just helping to keep the wall interesting.

Well, I know I'll be in the minority but I was not a big fan of Plants, too much "push PUSH" not enough testosterone, but I don't think Marriot would have had the lyrics, everything happens for a reason. I was lucky enough to see one of the last Humble Pie shows at Toads before he died, they were {even without the original lineup} incredible live.

    A word of warning

when you start to play the first tune do not, DO NOT TURN IT TO 11, the 1st tune, The Opal Crest of Zed starts with a bang, the recording is awsome, I think is is the best mixed rock Cd I have ever heard, the drums a crisp but THUD, the bass sounds like the old Fender type, vocals a screamin and clear and the guitar is wailing. Ths Cd is louder than most.

As far as the Moon stories, they abound, I have amassed a library on him, Both stories seem true, the Who were rough, when they weren't punchin out other bands they would turn on eachother

The swimming pool crash story for instance has been told so many ways, fact is he was drunk got in a fight with people at his house, drove his RR into a backyard pond and broke out his tooth on the steering wheel, the pond had dried to a mud pool and when he got out, still mad and still drunk all he could do was flop around in the mud.

After 70 the band had had it with him, he was back charged for every piece of damage he did and whatever it cost to bail him out including the flight to catch up with the band.

During the 70's, at the end of tour, the boys would have $500,000+ each, he would have $50,000 if he was lucky.

It was a combination of qualities about him that

contributed to the Cultural Rot. Very political - light on true activism, drug experimentation et al. His sexual experimentation was his business, but I will not pretend to say that I admire him for that. I happen to love Freddie Mercury's work with Queen, Kevin Dubrow of Quiet Riot, and Rob Halford from Priest. Their open homosexuality doesn't thrill me, but I respect them as the fine artists that they are/were. One of my good friends from high school also is and I used to make sure he didn't get beat on. A great Horseman that worked with my father used to let us stay at their Ski house on THe Hudson River - up near historic SchuylervillE, N.Y. When my father died, Lenny and Chuck were like uncles to me. They were better than most of our relatives. I believe People are born the way they are born and I don't hold it against them. However, you want cathc me going to see Broke Back Mountain. Last, We have several excellent clients that happen to be gay, so please don't even go there, dude. Never said I didn't like his music. In fact, i said in that prior post that I loved the Beatles and much of Lennon's solo work. I will agree that most of my favorite artists probably passively participated in Cultural rot, but none got so political and lead the charge like John. I respect him for some guts and acting on his conscience, but as I said before, it was mostly just a big ego-fest for he and that Beatle-breaker-upper, YOKO. Mad Dog
