A gaggle of new Mod-con boilers at AHR Expo

new offerings from Crown, SlantFin, and Laars.
Looks like Crown went the Weil Ultra style cast aluminum block. I wonder that their crystal ball may be the brightest as they REQUIRE AL29 stainless vent piping. Time will tell how PVC venting pans out. I've yet to see a listing for PVC used a a flue gas conductor?
Laars Mascot went with a stainless steel welded coil HX along the lines of the Lochinvar Knight and Munchkin and a few others. Looks like their double walled vent pipe is a requirement ala the Vitoden vent systems.
SlantFin opted out of the DNA modification method and built their own finned, cast aluminum HX. A fine loking piece with large water ways.
They may have finally used up all that post WW-2 battleship grey paint, and switched the entire line to a very eye friendly cream color with blue trim. A very nice looking piece. It may have edged Lochinvar out for the best looking Mod-con unit :) More of an appliance look. The Bobcat name seems out of place with the rest of their models, but what the heck.
I didn't get by the Burnham booth, there may have been a new Mod-con there also?

Mod-Con
Burnham had a cast aluminum sectional condensing boiler in their traditional blue cabinet also vented with stainless.
Burnhams' cabinet is large, especially compared to the Munchkin or German offerings. I couldn't get a good look at the heat exchanger but in the picture they were displaying it appeared the block was setup with a manifolded supply and return with flow through each section seperately unlike a traditional cast iron block and more like a fin tube boiler, in regards to flow through the sections.
They also had a cast aluminum heat exchanger purported to be used in a wall hung boiler to be released at some future date.
I also got a better look at the Triangle Tube offering, a stainless heat exchanger with pretty large water passages compared to others.

It is interesting to me that you saw them buh did you snap ..
a pic or two? I was wondering a bit about the Viega Snap Panels too. I really think that the panels regardles of who makes them are a real asset to lightening the load on the floors and,...i have to think the ramp times must be quicker for the emmitter. Which would be a good thing with a modulating condensing boiler0 -
Picture Taking on the floor
Picture taking on the floor of the Expo is a big no-no. Unless of course, the folks in the booth give their permission.0 -
Burnham=Crown?
I thought that the new condensing boiler from Burnham looked amazingly similiar to the Crown Bimini. Am I missing something there? I agree that the title "Bobcat" from Slant/Fin, didn't quite cut it. Had a great time though looking at all the vendors.

Burnham - Triangle too
Burnham's wall-hung is still in R&D, but should soon be "seen". It's HX was there though & placed atop a boiler adjacent to the larger condensing model that's destined to reside in their standard boiler sherpa-blue box. They too are venting with SS flue gasketed exhaust that incorporates a nice SS band to capture and prevent flue piping from separating.
Triangle's wall-hung boiler features a "higher grade of stainless steel" that they stated will provide long life. I had a live-fire demonstration the week prior to AHR and it was a mighty impressive whisper-quiet operation. Good thing there's indicator lights to let you know it's running(G). Vents with PVC.
I heard the argument for SS instead of PVC too. Like you, I haven't yet seen any issues. We've been installing PVC for hi-eff furnaces and boilers for many years. Good point regarding the upper limits for PVC however. When I installed our GlowCore (lasted less than three years) condensing boiler, the instructions called for the first ten feet to be schedule 80 CPVC to accomodate the higher discharge temps when return water temps exceeded 150F. In practical conditions, I never saw a delta-T in that 10' span & often wondered why that was a condition for proper installation.
Solar had far too minimal a presence at AHR.
Wilo's new pump is a doozer & a benchmark that will no doubt drive US manufacturers to step up their wire-to-water efficiencies as we begin the era of eliminating parasitic energy losses between the heat source and heat emitters.
Communication technology is poised for a revolution, but not yet there. We're getting very close to plug & play.

Venting...
Did any of these new goodies vent out the top? Like the Liberty II or Dunkirks? Or, do they all asume that the chimney will be right behind the boiler.0 -
