I would stay with a Weil Mclain, Smith or Peerless

Replace HB Smith Steam Boiler with what?

This summer I need to replace a large (240,000BTU) residential steam boiler. It's an HB Smith that replaced the original coal fired unit which is long gone.

Will someone please help me start my research by listing the companies that manufacture steam boilers. I imagine it is a fairly short list since these steam systems don't show up in new homes.

I would be glad to hear a recommendation for one type over another and the reason why. Better quality? efficiency? durability? easier to service?

The size/rating of the current unit places it at the upper end of most residential units and well into the range of the smaller industrial/commercial boilers. We have owned the house for 25 years and have no plans to move. Should we consider a smaller commercial unit? Will it have any advantage over a similarly sized residential steam boiler?

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Steam Boilers

The first thing to find out is the actual square feet of steam that you will need to fill all the radiators in the house. This will tell you what size boiler you really need. You may want to try the "find a pro" feature of this website, some of the best in the business are featured there.

There is quite a long list

Steam is very much alive and well...despite what some contractors may tell you (especially here in the Midwest). A few more to add to your list would be Slant Fin, Dunkirk, New Yorker, Columbia, Hydrotherm. I have been especially pleased with the Slant Fins I have installed. However, I have also had good luck with Burnham and Dunkirk.

Whatever boiler you use get a contractor that really knows steam, not just one that has been doing it for years.

Have had very good luck with Weil McLain, they are actually fun to put together. Crown also makes steam boilers but I don't know if they go big enough for your project.

    Mee too

Burnham is tops with me, especially if you're the guy who has to vacuum it each year. Far superior to work on.

Like Dunkirk too; a little cheaper but a day's work to clean.
