of the savings you will get from replacing that monster.....
We recently replaced one on a Kriebel Vapor system, with a Weil-McLain SGO-9. The old Water Tube was coal-fired originally, as most were. The original oil conversion burner had been replaced with a Beckett flame-retention oil burner. The W-M also has a Beckett. To get this grand old system to heat properly we had to fire the Water Tube at 2.5 gallons per hour and add baffles to the flue passages. The SGO-9 is running sweetly at 1.75 GPH- yes I know this is downfired, but the SGO appears to have been rated rather conservatively.
This is a substantial reduction. I have no doubt you would do as well by replacing yours. Do you have a steam or hot-water system?

What to do with it- still works fine
My circa 1910 boiler works just fine but I can no longer affoed to run it. It's a Am. Radiator Ideal W 0929-0 Series 8B converted from oil to NG. It's cool to watch the "fires of hell" when it lights off. I live in the Florida Panhandle
so I really only need it a afew weeks. What to do? Thanks0 -
oldie but goodie
If it aint' broke, don't fix it. Seriously, you are living on borrowed time. Sooner or later, it will fail. Unlike here in New England, doesn't seem like losing it during a "cold snap" would be a great hardship. There's lots of great efficient gas equipment out there. take your time and check things out. It's a luxury to have the time to consider all the options before investing in a new piece of equipment. Not like my customer who lost a boiler Sunday night when it was 12* out and the wind was howling...he didn't have time to think it thought. He just got a new boiler Monday morning.
