burnham sooted

I always like to get back to basics when I come across a situation like this. Do you have enough combustion air in the room? Does it have the right orifices? Did you check gas pressure on the low side of the gas valve? Is the boiler leaking water into the chamber? Did you flood the boiler then look between the sections to make sure there are no holes in them? An old steam boiler may be rotted through. Heck, I've even seen a few new one that were rotted out!. good luck.

    boiler sooted up

Worked on a steam boiler this last Fri. that was sooted on the left side only. Cleaned the heat exchanger and burners. Put it all back on line and the left side burners are tumbeling off the bottom side of the heat exchanger on the left side and turning yellow. There is nothing blocking the heat exchanger. Spent alot of time clean it so I know there is no soot blocking it. I have checked gas pressure. The burners are clean. The whole right side is working fine. Well I don't get it. Any ideas let me know. Thanks.

    sooting

when you say 'tumbeling off the heat exchanger' do you mean the flame is impinging on the hx? if so, is the unit overfired? Or is there more problems with the hx? Perhaps plugged higher up inside? Or... orifices too large on those burners? I '**** u me' gas fired.

I would look directly to the orifices on the side you are having problems with. We have found on several occasions that part of the orifices are not correct. This has been true of several mfrs. Just a quirk in mfr line sometimes.

    Sooting

Did you take the top cover of the boiler off and check to see if the sections are clean? We had a similar situation a few weeks bac, it was due to FILTHY burner sections.

    soot problem

I would interchange the burners to see if it still happens, then inter change the orfice.Look inside the burners for lint-dust.We also had a problem once with the orfice comming off the manifold on a slight angle causing soot with the poor mixture at the venturi.
    hope this helps

    I would guess

that Helgy has looked at the burners long and hard (new burners may be available) The boiler is still sooting on the left side. I would look at what there from the gas manifold thru the burner spuds or orfices making sure all is clean and the proper size. Next check out the Iron from top to bottom, did you pull the flue cover is everything clean? Burner air shutters all the same? Draft hood clear?
smoke pipe and chimney clear? Gas gauge and combustion Any. time keep looking you will find it. Best Wishes J.Lockard
