Slant Fin Steam Boiler Skimming

I noticed that the new Slant Fin Boiler has a drain valve on the skim tapping. Just open the drain and skim away. Anyone tried it? Also can a drain valve be added to the skim tapping on any boiler and skim it that way also??

    Skim

I use nipple and skim at rate that fills niplle 1/2-3/4 full. I'm not sure how you would do that with a Drain valve?

    Skimming slant fins

I have 2 two module Slant fin boilers (4 units total) with the skimmer and they seem to work very well! My units are piped with a tee downward and full port ball valve and hard piped drain line, but from the internal design of the section, it looks like a standard hose bib drain will work.

Its nice to go back to a job after instructing the owner how to skim and clean the boiler and find the water clear and the water line dead stable due to very effective intermediate owner cleaning after initial start up. These are the only boilers I have had this experience with, all the others usually need a whole lot of cleaning.

Those end sections look really interesting and are extra wide. The supply tapping is on the opposite end of the section from the connecting top nipples and this seems (along with some inclined planes inside) to help the boiler produce very dry steam through the smallish single 2 1/2 inch tapping. These 2- 180,000 input modules produce very dry steam, so dry that the header drip stays ice cold when they are firing, until the water gets dirtied up some a few weeks after cleaning.

    They skim realllllll EASY!

I use a tee with a full port ball valve pointing down, however, from the look of the internal baffle a simple boiler drain will do. And it looks like a very wide baffle, so skimming happens very quickly.

I have 4 of these installed and they are the only ones I have come back to after letting them run for a while and having the custumers do some cleaning and skimming themselves, and find crystal clear water and dead stable water lines. Again those skimmers really seem to work.

The end section appears to be quite unusual with the steam supply outlet on the opposite end of the section from the connecting nipples. The end section is also quite wide and has some funny internal baffles. Together, these little boilers seem to make very, very dry steam. With clean water the header drain stays ice cold, and for those that want to do the math, at 180,000 input with a 2 1/2 inch tapping, that ain't suppose to happen! It takes a good couple weeks of service after cleaning for any carry over to occur.

I is liking these boilers, so far!
