I dropped him a thanks for one of the best replies I've ever seen on this subject. Can't hurt to ask if we contractors can copy and use that!
Thanks John!

He replied to me today and said he gets a lot of e-mails like this from homeowners. I DO intend to write about it in The News.0 -
Good idea John
Let's face it. Most of the people that call us for "quotes" are not self-employed and do not consider what it costs to run a business.
Couple that with the fact our customers are not making major PHVAC purchases every day so sticker shock is to be expected. They just have no idea how much things cost.
If you could use the internet to buy all the parts for a Lexus, you could probably get the car for quite a bit less than the 40k+ MSRP. Putting it all together and getting it to run is another thing.
Unfortunately, our industry has been very good at keeping itself firmly entrenched in the year 1950, harboring a poor self-image. A customer has no issue buying a $400 Toto toilet, but the plumber has a problem charging more than $75 to install it. After all, it's just plumbing right? When the plumber says the installation is $400, the customer screams RIP OFF!! After all, it's just plumbing right?
