What is it?

the book picture is NOT identical with the photo. I suspect you may be correct, but a collector/vent/trap for a vapor system also looks a helluva lot like that(;-o).
PS, using 3/8" pipe for hanger "rods/supports" was very cool back in the day. It is hardly "bush-league" work. In its day, special "hanger" fittings were common and considered "state-of-the-art."
You made up your mind yet, Steamhead? Is it what Dan says, or is it a vapor collector/vent/separator?

Can anyone identify this object? The large vertical pipe on the left is from the common steam header. The piping on the right (small ones) are supports. It looks like a trap.0 -
Where do the pipes
coming out of the right side of the trap go?
Does the pipe coming into the trap from the main steam header serve to drain the header, as an equalizer would normally do?
Does the system have a return pump, or is it gravity return?
What is the name on the side of the trap? All Steamed Up, Inc.
Towson, MD, USA
Steam, Vapor & Hot-Water Heating Specialists
Oil & Gas Burner Service

no dead man would admit to this job
that piping job is about as bogus as it gets. the hangers are idiotic and who would pipe in any thing with three stiff connections without at least one swing joint??? probably done by the pvc guys ancestors. they were out there too.0 -
Looks ,
And appears to be piped like an F&T trap.
Frank, I think it says Excelco ? Any other hints? Chris0 -
looks to be a water heater...
what do you think Frank? looks like an Excelso steam water heater..top left would be steam supply, bottom condensate out, right side potable water in and out..what do you guys think? possible maybe...did you follow the right side pipes to see if they are potable?

Yeh, but, but,
Excelso made heaters, not vapor equipment. Bell & Gossett went on to buy the company and that's what they sold before getting into the Booster business.Retired and loving it.0 -
Yes - the name on the side is Excelso, and across the top it reads Size No. 25.
When I get back to the job I will trace out the piping runs on the right side. I believe Dan has it, that it is a heater. This house once had a Bain Marie (now nobody is going to ask me what that is, are they?)and this may be how it was heated. Unfortunately it is a long way to the kitchen from here. It may have also up-fed into the Flower Room of the house.
Thanks for all the feedback, hope the Fourth was fun for all.
Dave
p.s. How do I get back to the posting where Dan left the picture?0 -
I brought it back up, Dave.
It's just above this thread. They show the Size 25 in the catalog cut.Retired and loving it.0
