Hydronic Design Studio

Just got Siggy's combo Package Hydronic design Studio and hydronicad 1.0. Just starting to get used to the way they operate and now I have a question! When using the room heat load estimator in HDS I get a 6,000 BTU per hour difference when compared to The other program We usually use, Wirsbo's ADS. When using Siggy's HDS I did notice that when The Area Volume Calculator is used for room Square Footage the output is inputted into the exposed perimeter column. I went ahead and changed it back too the actual length of exposed perimeter wall. Anybody have any Thoughts on the BTU Difference? Hoping to see a FAQ at the appropriate design website for each program but until then I'll try the FAQ @ The Wall..............

    heat load calcs using HDS

There could be any number of reasons behind these differences. First, are you absolutely sure all the areas and volumes that are used as inputs in both programs are identical? It's easy to overlook defaults that might not be set as you assume. Another possible difference is assumptions built into either program. For example, the HDS automatically subtracts window and door area from gross wall area when calculating. It also assumes that the R-value of air film coefficients for walls and other surfaces is included in the Total R-value number input by the user. I'm not sure how the Wirsbo software handles these numbers. The bottom line is that heat load estimate calcs are really pretty simple mathematically, but there are lots of assumptions that different people / programs use that can skew results. Hope this helps.
