bath remodel

week one of the bathroom remodel has gone really well. Lots of work accomplished. The wife will be happy (which means we all will be happy) when this is over.
I'm wondering how common it is for you to see copper vent and waste pipes? The house was built in the early 60's and maybe copper was cheaper than iron. Certainly lighter. Very nice to see the waste pipes clean as a whistle, when the iron connecting to the sink trap was plugged to about 3/8" open.

Your house was done right between cast iron and PVC. Its actually pretty common around for house's of that age.
A little bit of advice from a guy ( plumber ) who just did his own bathroom over. HURRY up and get it donw. Your wife is happy now but when it starts to drag .... NOBODY HAPPY.
Good Luck

I never said
that she is happy now. Which of course means that Nobody is happy! Got one down day today (first time nobody is working here) and already I get asked how come no work gets done today? Let's see, tomorrow, new window, sheetrock, build the vanity. Next week, tile guys. I keep telling her that this is actually cruising along nicely.

She's lucky she's not married to me. I was cleaning under the cabinet in my main floor bathroom 6 years ago, and noticed the drain was corroded and kept looking for bad stuff. By the end of the day, the bathroom was just studs and joists. The previous owners had made two bathrooms above into one large bathroom and the joists above were butchered in the process so I was glad to get everything discovered. The one joist under the drain end of the tub in the lower bathroom didn't look very good either. I have copper drainage as well (1975 house -- and a 1950 boiler - go figure) and as much as I like the copper, when I go to fix the joists above, I'll have to take it all out and abs will be used to replace it. One new 3" elbow is the same price as all of the abs needed and the scrap copper will probably fetch enough for a vacation afterwards. ;-)
(redoing that bath is working it's way up the list - slowly)0 -
I think copper DWV was code around here in 1960 - 1961. The homes built in that period are all copper.0 -

copper is lighter than iron
Weezbo *~/:)so when the no more hub and gert heavy pipes came along Everybody was doing it most commercial work we have rolled with copper or no hub for a long time now.
residential work remodels i often just go with it and or use copper to abs band clamps mission couplings .0 -
Yesterday,when I was young...
...An old song done by Roy Clark!...Anyway,when I started going to work with Dad in '64,we were still into both copper DWV and cast iron. The CI was used underground, and we were still making lead joints up into the early '70s when Charlotte came out with the gaskets for hub pipe. We used ABS then PVC.starting in '70 or '71 (??) I've run many feet of DWV copper. Main thing to watch ,especially with "M" grade,in 3" or 4" is on a horizontal drain with aggresive water. It will eat pinholes in it,as well as it will in 1/2" or 3/4" potable systems.0 -
Not only
all that, but at least an hour toolbox talk every morning.
You should see this countertop in person. I wish it was mine. This is in my contractor/cousins house. It's Onyx and he's got it lit up from underneath. Really cool!

Shipwright's disease
You've got shipwright's disease. No, there is no cure except bankruptcy. Welcome to the club...0 -
copper is great, but...
I had copper for all plumbing in my house, but because I'm on a well and the water has a pH of about 6, all the supply was replaced with polybutylane, and some of the drain has been replaced with PVC. pin hole leaks and paper thin drains, Oh well.0
