atmospheric steam trap

You can pipe it to the return of the boiler, but you have to have enough "B" dimension to do it. You have to stack the condensate high enough to overcome the operation pressure, and at 5 PSI, you'd better have a tall building with the trap on the top floor. Use a receiver.

do steam traps have to work on a pressure differential? I mean, if I am running 5psi into a heater, does the outlet of the steam trap have to go to a condensate pump or can i plumb it to the return side of the boiler with no atmospheric vent? Does anyone make a steam trap that does not require a condensate pump? Thanks for any help.
  • Do you really need 5 PSI

at that heater? Crank it down if you can- this way the "B" dimension can be less than 12 feet.

Any trap which vents air from a heat emitter needs some sort of vent downstream of the trap. The condensate receiver, if used, functions as a vent. But why use a receiver if you don't need it? A standard main vent on the dry return, such as a Gorton #2, will take care of the air from a whole bunch of traps.
