Iron Fireman

Friend just bought house that dates from the early 20's. Saddly the heating system has been completly updated. But, it looks like the original system was coal fired and gravity (hot air). In the corner of the basement, near the coal storage are the remains of a very cool something! There is a metal box about 2' high, 3' long with what appears to be a large burner attached to it. The case is labeled "Iron Fireman". On the wall there is a electrical control box, black, with large on/off switch and small glass window in the front of control. It too is labeled IF. Could this be an automatic stoker? There are also the remains of some oil lines and an oil burner that probably was pulled when the new gas HVAC went in. Would love to get some history on the IF "thing"

    You....

Can try Oil Tech Talk. One of the headings labeled "Just For TEK'S/ Techs" may have some information. John Gates left his legacy to Alan , and you just might hit paydirt there. You might also try the Library on the column on the left. Many surprises reside there also.

I've been in the business long enough to see some Iron Fireman boilers, but have never seen a warm air version of it. Good luck. Any photos? Chris

Yep, Iron Fireman warm air. The burner blower was on the exhaust side , pull through, like a gas burner. My aunt had one since 1953. I have seen 3 or 4. Might be called Dunham Bush also if my memory is any good.
