Radiator distance from wood furniture

Hello all,
How far away should I keep wood furniture (dresser, bookshelves, etc...) from steam radiators? In both rooms, the radiators are fully exposed, and i can feel the wood getting hot every time the heat is on. it even warms my socks in the drawer :)
I currently i don't have any wood furniture flush with the radiators, I keep it at least 5 inches away. Is this enough? My radiators are relatively old i think, and the one in the living room produces a lot of steam.
Thanks,
Emily

Emily, The heat is not as much of a problem as your statement "Radiator produce allot of steam" Is it just hot or is steam visable off the radiator? Like a leaking vent or supply valve?0
