Intermittent Pilot on Vent-Less Gas Log

i am all for human beings using thier own thinking and making sure that it follows a sane ,logical path that they can live with....you sir, are well out over the ice, though, on that particular idea.
if there is anyone here who you feel is being out an out offensive then you have yet to meet me in winter .the most difficult decisions must be made when the temps are 60 70 below and lower. designing things to aid someone in suicide though is against my religion. you can ignore ignorance just shut it off like a bad radio programme, minor technicality though is it is wise to heed wisdom, your first reply to your post was likely a warning to ajudicate your thinking to keep you safe. The mistake a man makes he can correct when he is enlighted to the mistake,to continue in that mistake is to willfully do something Wrong ,doing something wrong over and over again then can become a mechanical action, should someone else then see your work and follow in your footsteps then you are leading them down a course of action that spiritually you are then responsible for, even if you didnt tell them to follow the example.
Anyone here can vouch for the fact that we all add to the colour and texture of one anothers lives, and are open to honest answers founded in good work ,the reason for all these codes we seem so interested in day to day is to protect the lives of members of the society in which we live. we have what is know as the "Publics Trust",that basically means we arent out to send them off in a wrong direction .
many of my replies are a bit ...well...colourful yet the underlying message is to heed the right word, at least get a second opinion, and do your own thinking ...I trust you can get the story straight. no one here thinks your sub human because you ask a question. if i told you "Oh Yah you can do that" based on information that was 30 years old and someone else said well, now Weezbo you are mistaken or gave me an out buh instead i belive what i belive based on outdated information can you see where that might lead?
for me, if someone says well that is wrong thinking, then i will research it and then while it may not be a comfortable feeling i will at least thank them for bringing it to my attention. i dont see some major impropiety for a man to admitt a mistake.perhaps it is a blessing. and i think it to be better to beat someone with a stick than to let them kill themselves or others. manufacturers test all kinds of parameters of equipment often well over anything required or publicized however i have to date never heard of anything indicating that one can take out or delete a safety devise of an appliance such as you have mentioned..to do so would most likely would be considered "Criminal negligence".

I have a Vent-Less Gas log. I would like to replace the standing pilot with a Honeywell Y8610U 3003 Universal Retrofit Intermittent Pilot Gas Burner Ignition Kit. MY Gas log is a millivolt system so I will be installing a 24vac transformer to accommodate the Honeywell system. My concern is that my existing pilot system has an Oxygen Depletion Sensor built in to the pilot. I know that I will loose this safety feature when I install the Honeywell system. Is there any way to add an external Oxygen depletion sensor to the Honeywell system? Or should I not worry about it?
Thank you,
Bob Hiller

New Ignition
It is never a good idea to change manufacturer specs, but since your new Ign. system works on DC falme rectification, the sensor is not needed. Totally different "Bird". You will of course need new Gas valve, Pilot burner, and of course a t-former.....This is not something you want to experement with. Call a professional contractor. I'd rather see you install a new system that has the electronic spark that you like. Keep it SAFE man.... Mike T0 -
Thanks Mike,
The Honeywell Y8610U 3003 Universal Retrofit Intermittent Pilot Gas Burner Ignition Kit contains every part needed. I have installed many of them (in my homes, garages and pole barns) with great success. My only concern was the Oxygen sensor.

starting your own company
What you are describing is criminal! You are taking a highly engineered product and totally rebuiling it into something else. The ODS pilot itself is a massive bracket designed so you cannot change the relationships btw flame and thermocouple, which would change the dropout time. The ODS is tuned to a special millivolt valve. The gas supply to the pilot even has its own regulator.
Man, ventfrees are controversial enough without you reinventing the wheel. You change the pilot or modify it in any way and the mfr. will wash their hands of any Oops!, including CO poisioning or fire. What you would have is your own brand product.
Instead of starting your own company, leave the mfg to mfrs. Let them pay the big bucks to engineer, test, and list products. Do you rebuild boilers and furances with non-OEM parts?
Don't do it!!!0 -
Re: Starting your own company
Who said anything about starting my own company. This is for personal use. It sure is funny how thing get interpreted or is it mis-interpreted? Re: "Do you rebuild boilers and furances with non-OEM parts?" I don't, but every service person that has ever worked on any of my furnaces has!

Please worry about the ODS safety. Without it you have no protection for you and your family should something go wrong with the gas log. It was put in place to meet code and if removed, the system itself should be red tagged and removed from service.0 -
Bob as a person who has
been involved with the ODS science from its inception and also having over 40 years in the gas business I would not recommend removing the ODS feature. It is engineered to shut the system down safely in the event of low oxygen which directly relates to Carbon Monoxide issues. It is also related to the possibility of flame roll out which could cause a fire. It was my job at the utility I worked for to test all the equipment we sold and also to develop replacement/retrofit systems for gas. This is not a good move even if it is for your own system. I would not do it in my own home.0 -
Dan Holohan Associates, Inc. - REMOVE ME FROM THIS LIST NOW
Please remove me from this list. My question has been answered and many opinions expressed. I do not want further notifications of replies. If I am not removed within 3 days or if my name is posted in any magazines without my prior written consent the next call you will receive will be from my attorney.
Sincerely,
Bob Hiller0 -
Bob,
Take the stick out of your butt, and realize that the responses you received are from REAL pros. Timmie's words are the strongest reason to not do what you want.
Safety is the biggest concern here! What you're proposing is just what another poster described...starting your own company. The original manufacturer will cleanse themselves of all and any warranties and obligations if you alter their equipment in any way.Simply put...It's yours, not theirs any longer. Think about it...It could save you and your family. Chris0 -
It is easy to see that I am dealing with a bunch of uneducated egotistical union buddies here. My family is more important than yours so shut. I never said I was going to do the installation on the vent-less log. That is precisely why I asked the question. It is odd that first responder thought ok was ok and the rest did not? The Manufacturer said that they did not have a kit but advised me that there where many available from Honeywell and RobertShaw. I blocked this list now so I don't have to listen to the PROS anymore.

awesome
Because "The Wall" tried to steer this gentleman in the proper direction he wants to retain a lawyer to sue everyone.
Pal perhaps you should sock away a few bucks, so when things go wrong you will have some ready cash. Best Wishes J.Lockard0 -
Call us what you want,
I've been called worse, and by smarter people than me. It still doesn't make them right.
If you're so passionate about the good advice that you've been given here, move on. Maybe you can find the answers you expect somewhere else. Good luck . Chris.0 -
Chris
This gent is a waste of time. He wants hear our blessing, no matter if it's a good, correct thing to do. As soon as it goes bad, he'll have his lawyer contacting each and every one of us that respond, trying to lay the blame.
I'm afraid that he'll be the big loser if someone in his family gets hurt. BUT, he'll blame someone else.

This was a great case
You see there are all sorts of people out there just trying to sucker someone on a chat list to endorse a bad idea so they can sue you when it blows up. Just as was done here, always take the high road. The only answer that would have please him would have been the incorrect one. My gratitude to everyone who avoided his trap.
Just remember, guys like him get their rocks off messing with people on these lists. If what he was proposing was such a good idea, don't you think mfrs. would have done it already?
He will probably resurface under a pseudonym.0 -
?
I'd be interested in contacting the posters homeowners insurance carrier to inform them what he's up to(as well as his attorney) and the local construction code department & DYFS so that he may be added to THEIR list (his attorney will drop him too). Its people like this that keep MY insurance rates rising each year. Silly man, tricks are for kids! You just can't protect people from themselves BUT I can protect YOUR kids from YOU!

Almost sounds like the early signs of carbon monoxide poisoning have already set in...
Ain't the internet a wonderful place:-)

Last Response
Can any of you read. I said that if the forum owner did remove my name from this list or if they published my name in a magazine without me written consent that I would have my attorney contact them. I said nothing about suing anyone based on their replies. As a matter of fact I am not going to install the retrofit kit on the Gas Log, I am going to buy a new one. To all of you who have contributed, even those who have threated me, Best wishes to you and yours in this upcoming holiday season.
Just as a side note. I design and manufacture Wheelchair lifts and other aids for the disabled for very low cost. Most times free. Ask yourself when you have ever done something good for another who was less fortunate that you.

and
Best wish's to you and your family. And in answer to your question, I have put in roughly 25 system's free of cost in the last three years for families who could not afford to do so and for the elderly. I have also cleaned and serviced more unit's than I can count (for free) for people who otherwise would not have had it done due to cost.
I would however add, this site has helped countless people who could otherwise not afford to find the information they need and I would also wonder how many people it may have saved. Have a nice day...0 -

Get a life.
Re-read what you posted and think about it.
This is Dan's house. He can do as he pleases. If he does select your post for publication, it's because it's his choice. That's the price you pay for posting here.0 -
I'd love to be a fly on the wall during THAT conversation...
Uh, Hello Mr. Holohan, this is Bob Blanks attorney. He wanted me to call you, and invite you and the Lovely Marianne to dinner at Bob's house, however, Mr Blank has taken ill due to acute CO poisoning, and we'd like to see the transcripts of your web site...
Why else would someone ask or offer to have their attorney call someone??
Your last name isn't Star is it?
I'm tellin' ya. Some people kids,,.

checked the box?
I'm guessing our happy camper accidentally checked the box to "notify me by email about all messages posted in this topic". If so, Bob, you can block the emails. I'm glad to hear you aren't going to rebuild that gas logset
I'm sorry you're such a miserable cuss. You asked on an open public forum, didn't like the answers you got then made all sorts of nasty remarks about those who were trying to help you. If that's the way you go about life then you are one miserable person and I pity you. How do you think we feel about wasting all our time and attention to an ingrate?
I hope life turns better for you Bob.0 -
FWIW, Bob
Where I come from, we still call it Christmas, not "the holiday season".
You got the best possible advice, from the best Pro's on earth, and you bitched.
Tell you what, I don't know gas from a hole in the ground (how's that for a disclaimer), so go ahead, install what you want. But send your family to stay with Aunt Edith or whomever, you stay there, and we can add your name to the Darwin's list. Because I'd rather not see you reproducing.
My 8 yr' old knows more about CO & oxygen depletion than you do, and I only got "Encarta" a week ago to help her with science homework. BTW, do you know what the "Water Cycle" is, or % of oxygen in the atmoshpere is, or the PEL of CO, she does. TRy Encarta.
Sleep tight, don't let the CO bugs bite.
Hey man, what's that smell I can't smell.
