I was tought never use teflon tape on gas lines due to chance on getting in gas steam and plugging gas valve.Yesterday found 3 gas leaks from some plumber who piped in anew hwt and used tape on all his joints!20 years ago there were numerous gas valve failures and I remember the honeywell rep tech tell us NEVER EVER USE TEFLON ON GAS!

Their is a teflon type tape that is yellow which is made just for natural gas connections. The white tape is NOT and will fail. Nothing wrong with using the tape, as long as you use the correct kind.

    teflon tape

As long as you hold the tape back from the first thread on the nipple, you'll be fine. I've been using tape on threaded gas lines for over 20 years. It's how you use it that's important.

    Teflon

Years ago when I did Commercial Plumbing our rule of thumb was "never use teflon within 6 feet of the equipment" It was fine on long runs etc.

    gas teflon tape.

The yellow tape specifically rated for gas works very well. It's reliable and goes quick. For most uses, you'll never use pipe dope again.
  • Most important thing with tape or

just pipe dope is to keep the fittings near the gas valve sparsly covered so that tape or dope do not get into the gas valve and get on the internal seat. In the case of tape a little dope applied with the tape will keep tape from coming loose and getting into the gas valve, VERY LITTLE.

These days with crappy pipe and fittings

teflon tape is all but a must :) I don't know that I have ever seen a gas valve issue from teflon tape.

In my area a 30 PSI test is required on all gas piping. It's not as easy as you may think to seal to that pressure with just a coating of Rectorseal. I'm still blaming the thread and fitting quality. And sticking to it :)

Even if a small string of teflon found it's way into the piping, most if not all gas valves have a screen at the connection port.

Hold the tape back as mentioned and put a coating of thread dope on also. This helps keep the tape in place and lubes the first threads into the aluminum gas valve body.
