Chinese boilers..

they're already busy building boilers. Check out http://www.made-in-china.com/
and search on boilers. They have been making cast iron fitting for decades, they have the foundries, the technology is ancient.

    Chinese boilers

Are the Chinese building boilers (and/or furnaces) and related equipment marketed in North America? If not, can it be expected that they will eventually do so?

I lost touch after Bruce Lee. Think he fought Norris about 1975? Things got progressively "curiouser" after that. Fact is, I lost touch period.

Laugh at the Chinese if you want. Those of us old enough remember when "Made in Japan" brought on a similar reaction.

    Wise Words

... and, like the Japanese of an earlier era, my observations from ISH NA were that they're starting off copying what seems to be popular and simple to make. Lots of radiators, valves, fittings, etc. to be seen at ISH NA... It only stands to reason that this trend will continue by their manufacturers climbing up the foodchain to increasingly more complicated assemblies.

I do wonder though what market they'd address first. My guess is Japan because, even though many Chinese don't care for the Japanese due to their bloody history, there is a lot of trade going on already. Eastern Europe may be another destination, given the price-sensitivity of the buyers, etc. Western Europe is likely to slap them with obscure NTBE's or quotas, and the US market may be too small (yet) to be a good first foreign beach-head. But you never know.

Lest we forget, the Chinese are already leaders in the solar field, installing close to 75% of worldwide capacity in DHW heating solar systems.

I certainly am not laughing at them. Anybody with a pulse knows that the Chinese manufacturing "engine" is at full steam and heading right towards us (pun intended). I was just wondering when they might get into the home heating business.

    They're already in.

While at ISH in Frankfurt earlier this year, we saw quite a few companies from China. They appear to be making alot of fittings and tools at this point. There were a few displays of radiators (panel types) and "knock-off" press fittings.

I brought back a few in Stainless, that work with Viega Pro-Press tools and eqipment. I'm sure they will be a force to be reconed with in time. Price point will be their ploy and you KNOW that someone will have to be the first to try it out. With their government most likely subsidizing manufacturing in some way, the stuff will find it's way here and either cause mayhem, or a big push to price competitively. We'll see. (it has also in the past been "labeled" by an American company and sold as their own....Who'd a thunk?) Chris

    Expect it, but...

With ASME approvals required, it won't be easy to enter the US market. I'd suggest they'll be making parts for other boiler manufacturers, rather than the entire unit.

whats the purpose of that web site?

Looks like an easy web portal to find ways you can kill american jobs by out-sourcing. Very sad.
  • The one encouraging thing

in this discussion is that the ancient technology is just that, ancient. Most of the HO that we have the opportunity to partner with are coming to us because the ancient ways are not the best ways.

If US manufacturers want to continue to have something to sell, they will have to change their paradigm. More units at less per unit cost is out. Fewer high value, high performance, higher profit from increased value units is in.

Gentlemen, provide your customers BENEFITS not features. High fuel and operating costs are here to stay.

Offer bullett-proof Made-In-USA solutions and there is no need to fear the ancient interloper. The market that you all create will crowd him out.

For some good reading take a look at:

"Delivering Knock Your Socks Off Service" from Performance Research Associates and "The New Strategic Selling" and/or "The New Conceptual Selling" by Stephen E. Heiman, Diane Sanchez pub Warner Business Books.

Take some time to work on your business in addition to the work you do at your business. This stuff will revolutionize your thinking and renew your enthusiasm.
