I have been installing so many low mass boilers lately that it is fun to do high mass once in a while. All 450 lbs. of it.

Nice work...
... this is either a huge structure or it has been micro-zoned.... that's a lot of zone valves! Who makes them?
I also see several i-Series components from Taco... how did you like them?0 -
Matching blue walls!
You even match the paint on the walls! Thanks for posting the pictures!0 -
The system is microzoned. 8 Myson baseboard zones, 1 hydro-air zone, 3 staple up radiant zones, and 1 slab radiant zone. I have 4 temperatures coming out of this system. High temp for DHW, direct boiler reset for the baseboards, med. temp for the staple up, and low temp for the slab. All are on outdoor reset. I used a tekmar control to reset the boiler directly and 2 Taco I controls for the radiant zones. These Taco controls are great controls for simple reset. They will also give boiler protection if needed. Since my slab zone was so small, I did not use this feature. As much as I like Buderus, I find the Logomatic control much too confusing and I have to study the manual everytime I need to make an adjustment. Except for the tekmar boiler reset control, all the controls are Taco. The zone valves are Caleffi.
I did not use any Honeywell controls on this job, except for perhaps the aquastat control that comes with the boiler. I did not really do that on purpose, it just worked out that way. My friend, Carol Fey, our local Honeywell rep, brought her national sales manager to the job site just to see the fact that there was no Honeywell. Believe me, I am not bad mouthing Honeywell, there is just so many cool controls out there to choose from.
We also did part of the cooling system on this house. They used 3 Unico cooling units. They each have a coil in them that I am pumping chilled water through. The 5 ton chiller pump the chilled water into a 40 gallon buffer tank. I then pumped out of that to the 3 cooling zones. The entire cooling system is filled with antifreeze.
The attached photos show some of the Taco controls and the buffer tank with a glycol feeder (glycol pig). Thanks to Mark Eatherton for his article in Contractor on how to make a feeder. The only problem I had was the fact that this system needed 50 lbs operating pressure. That meant that I needed to charge the feeder up to 100 lbs or more. Well, I used street pressure to push the glycol into the feeder. I got only 90 lbs so we will see how well that works.
