Gas Meter Shut Off

What does the gas company do when the meter and service has to be moved for a number of reasons or if the building is being taken down?

Is the entire main shut-down to move or cap the service line?

    Gas Meter Location

My Gas meter is located in a rather odd place outside my home. It is next to the freshair vent for the sewer and when ever the sewew backs-up, the rooter man complains that he may whack the meter with the machine(I Agree with him), anyway, the thought of moving the meter came up and, he realized that no "Street" turn off could be located...So, my question is, in NY, long island is it required for the utility company to have a "Turn off" located either in the street or soemwhere on the lawn, besides at the meter? He said he could legally move the meter providing he could find a shut off, which he could not.

    METER VAVLE

In NJ it isnot required to have a shut off at the curb.I would think the same is true in NY. But In NJ only the gas company can relocate the gas meter

    gas meter shut off

Jerry, here at National Grid in central NY if the service is a "medium pressure service" (20 psi before the regulator)and the meter is located outside there will be one shut off just above grade, before the regulator.
Inside services with "medium pressure" with the regulator inside there will be a shut located in a curb box outside. The regulator must also vent to the outside.
"Low pressure" services will be at 8" wc located outside will have a shut off just above grade. If the service is located inside there will not be a curb box type shut off outside.
You can contact the utilty and ask the about moving the service for you. It could just be a fitting job or relocating the sweep/riser, but they'll let you know.
Just a note about these numbers given for pressure, they will vary slightly depending on location and or weather. And we also have a "anti freeze" type set up and "air operated" curb boxes too but you don't have either.
    I hope this helps.

    Outside

Outside meters usually don't have or need to have curb stops, they must have a meter stop above the grade. If all you need to have moved a little to the left or right is the meter not the service riser the gas utility should be called and the cost if any should't be too high.

    gas shut off

    Hi Jackchips,
If there is a bldg demo the gas crew digs up the service at the tee and caps it off then all the can piping inside the basement ie meter bar back to the head of the service is removed along with pulling the meter so it can be tested, painted and re-issued.
In a gas emergency with gas blowing inside and the percent gas range between 5 and 15% there are other actions that could be taken like evacuate, vent and take care of sources of ignition. It all depends on what you find when you arrive and talk with the customers.

    NO STREET STOP?

I can't help but feel that the very idea of not having a "Street Stop" at the curb is scary to say the least. This must be something that the "CodeMakers" have overlooked for what ever rea$ons. I know if I had a say, it would be mandatory.(Just my two cents.)

    street shut off

LW, If the gas service is a low pressure service (about 8" wc) there is no curb box outside to shut it off. It doesn't take too much to plug a leak with only 8" wc if you're in the basement and have a leak on the piping.
Now if we're talking the medium pressure service (about 20 psi) and the meter is located inside, then yes .. there will always be a way to shut the gas off outside via curb box or pnumatic valve. Just remember too that this same service will have a regulator inside before the meter that'll knock the pressure down to 6-8" wc
