    BANGING NOISES FROM CAST RADS

I've been called to come look at a hot water heating system in a four storey, 28 unit, 60 year old apartment building. Many tennants are complaining of banging noises from the cast iron rads. Wondering what questions to ask and what things to look for. The super said they have bled the rads and from some they are getting very muddy water. What is the proper system pressure for a four storey building? Thanks in advance for any input.

air in the system / system pressure?

A few "if's". If the pressure at the top of the system is near zero, and if the water tepmerature is near boiling, and if the circulator is on the return side ... It could be that the circulator is causing a vacuum and reducing the pressure enough to cause the water at the top of the system to "FlASH" to stem and cause clashing.

cheak to see if it is a two piece pump assy

a broken coupling can cause alot of racket as well and yes a four story building, 40 feet high at 20 psi is going to get you zero prssure on the top floor as previoulsy posted.

The super mentioned there is heat at all the rads but the noise has been there for months and is banging every few minutes and keeping people awake at night. Any suggestions?

    ask them

to sleep during the day, and as posted check your circulator linkage. Best Wishes J.Lockard

    Banging

I was at this building today and found system pressure @ 50 psi, no apparent air in rads-all hot, pump coupling good, no zone valves in the system. Funny thing is that banging starts in the evening and lasts til 6 in the morning. Any suggestions?

    maybe?

a drummer wannabe practicing on the rads at night? A head scratcher for sure. You may have to do a late eavning visit so you are there when it is happening
