    Heat only

You wouldn't leave your car running 24-7 juat incase you might go to the grociery store some time that day.Don't leave the boiler sitting at limit bleeding BTU's up the chimney 24-7. Leave it cold start.

    issue of expansion/contraction?

my boiler guy advises not to have it cold start due to increased wear and tear on boiler due to greater expansion and contraction arising from greater temperature fluctuation.
(Probably much less an issue in the really cold weather when heating cycles are more constant.)
    any thoughts?

    There are certainly differing opinions.

We only do cold start boilers unless there's a domestic coil and I can't remember the last one of those we installed. Probably 10 years at least.

Some say there's a difference in cleaning cold start vs maintaining boilers but we haven't seen that in the ones we regularly service.

    couple of ideas

nothing wrong with cold starts, thats only spring and fall anyways, but you could go with constant circulation with preferably a multi speed pump and an outdoor controller. That would lower your temp, give you a flatter heat curve ( which usually means more even heat). Don't know how you are set up with zones or primary secondary piping, but those can pretty easily be rectified.
