Loud noise!

Had a complaint about a loud noise coming from the copper fin baseboard, they described it as a brief but very loud bang. They said it would only happen on really cold days, the sound was usally noticed in the morning when they would turn the thremostat up in the sun room and sit down to read and bang! then it would go away. They said they notice this on the 2nd floor zone on occasion as well. They keep both these thermostates down low at night. Anyone deal with this type of complaint before. Please help. additional info: Peerless JOT boiler with riello burner(which lights off nice no delay after ignition. Old house old system old problem, living with it.

    Expansion

It could be the expansion of the pipes as they come back up to 180 from 60 degrees. There could also be an air problem contributing to this.

sounds like the first flow of hot water thru a very cold baseboard is causing a large amount of pipe expansion, and if the pipe is pinched or rubbing against a stationary object it could cause the pipe to slip suddenly and make a banging sound.
