    What your looking at is part of the Boston central artery built in the 50s. It is being torn down now as the entire road is being put under ground. That ugly blight cut the city in half and by 65 was jammed every day. Never heard about snow melt in it though....

    thats amazing that they designed radiant heat into the central artery but just like the highway it did not work glad its disappearing a bit at a time

    Yes, and from what I read it actually worked pretty well, but - it needed to be activated before the snow started falling to get the road warmed up a bit first - and - it was only used for a couple of years after the highway went in service as no one had secured a long term contract with Boston Edison for the steam.

    BTW - the steam plant in question still supplies district heating to many buildings in downtown Boston.

    In another year or so it will all be a distant memory when it is torn down replaced by tunnels directly underneath it.
