\"Fast Food Nation\" - hb

I try to make a point of reading one book per month that has absolutely nothing to do with the HVAC world. I just finished the book “Fast Food Nation” and should be read by anyone who has ever eaten at a fast food restaurant. While it focuses mainly on the fast food industries, it is an alarming and sometimes sickening tale of corporate mentality and the franchising of America. Small business owners beware!

I can promise you will never look at McDonalds the same way again.

Warm Regards,

    Good book!

But disturbing. This weekend I drove up through the panhandle of Texas... Borger, Dumas, Dalhart. The feedlots were a depressing sight to behold: thousands of cattle packed shoulder-to-shoulder on fenced-in, trampled, muddy, blazing hot lots. It had just rained and steam was rising off the lots in a fetid vapor. Like a concentration camp for cows. I'm not feelin' sorry for Teller County cattle.

Damn! If you're not supposed to eat meat, why does it taste so good?

    It always amazes me

when I travel- checking into a motel and looking for a place to eat, and seeing that most of the cars from the motel are now parked at McDonalds. Meanwhile, the locally owned restaurant where I eat is at least half empty. What a sad situation- we take a vacation to "get away from it all" but we head straight for the things we're supposed to be getting away from.

    You should see...

...the Arkansas chicken farms and N Missouri hog farms. Heaven knows I'm carnivorous, but the poor things can hardly move.

You can understand why chicken thighs have virtually turned to "white" meat--the birds don't even walk. Have heard that the super-specials on chicken can be young birds that suffocated, but of course that could be BS.

    I'd Suspect...

...that your regulations are very similar to the one's here in Canada. We do work at a big turkey processing operation, and any bird that doesn't make it to the killing floor alive is sent to the rendering plant ("protein recovery" is the polite name for it...) along with feathers, blood, guts, feet and heads to be turned into animal feed. And what a funky, funky process THAT is...

Sometimes you can know too much.................................

you ever watch sausage being made???????? Do you know what the casings are made from???? Ever been on a "killin' floor"? What do you do with a horse that is severly constipated?>???? You don't wanna know.... Somethings are better left unsaid and unseen.

I didn't want to break the news.........

but your zackley right.......shucks!!!! I taught Hawkeye how its done. Grease your arm up real good and start probing...its like cleaning out a stuffed house trap on a sewer...only you have to go all the way up to your armpit (usually)..all the while force-feeding the horse mineral oil with a bit of whiskey in it to make it more palatable...now, folks the Mr. ed is not going to take this casually....he's got to have his head tied off to one of the barn beams and sometimes hobbles on so he don't kick ya need at least 3 good strong horseman..sounds gross, but If you love animals and don't want them to die you do it.
