Big threaded pipe is beautiful.....

The guys just finished this one last week. I decided to do the header in threaded instead of welding because I knew it would be tough to get our welder out when it was already down in the single digits here in Chicago. I would normally just do threaded down into the header to create swing joints for the boiler and threaded up to a union above the Hartford loop so return piping can be easily replaced then let our welder take care of the rest. We've done the Peerless version of this boiler before ( the TCII), but tried the Smith 28HE because of a shorter lead time on the burner, but will definitely try to stick to the Peerless in the future. Smith' instructions are nearly useless, the jacket brackets were threaded wrong and the jacket instructions were buried in some other box not with the jacket. As to be expected the Honeywell PA pressuretrol was defective and, as we've been seeing more and more often, the hot dog style float/switch assembly in the M&M 61 ( same as the 67) was flaky. We'll use a 63 next time and continue to see if we can find an alternative to the McDonnell and Miller controls. The guys do some beautiful work.

Why not go almost to the ceiling with the boiler take off? OR does that boiler have a large steam chest, so carry over is less of and issue.

IS that 3” or 4” pipe?

    Is there a skimming port?
    8.33 lbs./gal. x 60 min./hr. x 20°ΔT = 10,000 BTU's/hour

Two btu per sq ft for degree difference for a slab

The big pipe is all 5 inch and the boiler does have a nice steam chest. The skimmer is on the right side near the wall where the circular plate is located 1 1/2 inch out of the boiler to a 3/4inch drain line. The chemical port is above it.

    Awesome work.

What are you using to thread the 5"?

We measure carefully before installation and have most everything precut/threaded and then use nipples to make of the difference.

Why two valves in the feeder bypass?

One valve for positive shut off, the other for throttling flow for skimming. Ball valves don't like to be throttled.. they tend to wear and begin to leak. Regular washer and seat valves made for throttling are getting to be hard to find.

    Nice work!
Is that a water meter and a regular VXT? Or is that the "commercial" style VXT?

That's the VXT-C which comes with the water meter. Flows 5 gallons/minute, so it can handle just about any boiler we put in. The standard ones can't handle more than about 600,000 btu/hr input boilers, so that when we step up to this one.
