Steam Change-Out

Brian, Dragon and Henry knocked this one out yesterday. It was in a 1915 bungalow in Arlington, VA.

The old boiler was grossly oversized. There are only six radiators. Also the copper piping was leaking at several joints.

We had to shore up the rickety basement steps with 2x4 re-inforcement before we started. I once had the steps collapse on me as we were bringing in the boiler. A few bumps and bruises but no serious injury. Could have been much worse. Never again.

We went back with a Peerless 63 Series.

This is on a two-pipe system. There are no traps on the system. It may have had graduated inlet valves st one time but they have long since been replaced. We will try running at low pressure and see how it does. We may need to come back to add orifice plates or traps.

Thanks Ron. The sweat joints were leaking on the copper.

    Really clean job!!!

Looking at the size of the steam piping I imagine the system was a vapor system. Me for starters I would set the operating steam pressure at 1 psi with a differential of .5 psi and see where that takes the system operation.

I have had some old systems like what you are talking about operate at 1/2 Psi with 2 oz differential.
