Steamer Install

EzzyT Member Posts: 1,294
We ripped out this oversized and piped horribly wrong steamer.
We installed a Peerless 63-03 with 3” drop header with a for the low pressure gauge and We also upgraded the main venting replaced a bunch of the leaking steam main and dry return piping.
3 of the rooms in the house had copper dinner baseboard that the previous homeowner had installed. We ripped them out and piped in new steam risers and installed 2 free standing cast iron radiators and a wall hung steel Runtal SteamView Radiator in the 2nd floor bathroom.
We also replaced the water heater with a HTP Crossover 20 gallon hybrid high efficiency water heater.
We still have to go back to insulate all the piping and do our final skimming and wanding.

That old boiler was actually made by Dunkirk, and- you guessed it- they reduced the steam outlet from 2-1/2" to 2". What is it about Dunkirks that makes people do that..................

That system won't know what hit it. Nice job, @EzzyT .

I don’t know Frank. Almost every Dunkirk and the other ECR manufactured steam boilers we get to see our area are piped in copper and almost in a configuration like the one I posted.
    Thanks Frank.

That's a great example of how to do it right.

The old boiler must have been piped by someone with a huge pile of 2" copper fittings that he needed to get rid of.

    Sexy...awesome again!

Hey Ezzy, how do you like the HTP Crossover?
    Any issues-maintenance or otherwise?
Every hear back from a customer about DHW output or operating costs.
    Just wondering.
    Thanks

    Thanks @STEVEusaPA .
So far we’ve installed about 6 or 7 of them and haven’t had any issues.
A few of them where on homes with 3+ full bathrooms and no issues with keeping up on the DHW demands. I don’t have the exact operating cost numbers in front of me but what clientele have told me that there where significant savings from there previous hot water heater set up.

Have any pictures of the radiator work?

Thanks @AMservices, when we go back to insulate, skim and wand the boiler again I’ll take pictures of the radiators. There’s nothing special about them.

@EzzyT ----- A beauty of a job. The customer is certain to be satisfied.

What is that fitting you are using at the end of your skimmer?

Thanks @Intplm. It’s our speed skimming tool. @Ironman gave me the idea a bunch of years ago. It’s a 11/4” fernco cap with one half cut away. This way there’s more surface area and allows us to skim faster.

    Looking very good.

    Questions, if I may;
You must feel the double 3" risers are warranted over the minimum of double 2" risers? Any hard numbers/advantages for that?
Did that boiler come with the Safegard we see or did you swap it for the factory installed Cyclegard?

Actually, the manufacturer's specification is for a single 2" riser for that boiler

Thanks @JUGHNE, so the math doesn’t lie the velocities of the steam are significantly much lower with the full-size 3” versus the 2” which in will create dryer steam along with the drop header. I don’t have the exact numbers in front of me.
I would love to do an experiment with a cut out window looking into the steam chest of two exact same sized boilers one with 2” and the other with 3” to see the true overall difference of the quality of steam is being produced in the steam chest.

We swap out all the cycleguards to safeguards.

@EzzyT is the "steam chest" the volume of space inside the header? or is it inside the boiler?

@ethicalpaul the steam chest is inside the boiler.
Its from the boiler water to the top of the inside of the boiler sections.

As an aside, would be really nice if boiler manufacturers would publish steam chest size. Would be nice to compare side by side.
