section sealant failure?

Any thoughts on what would have caused the sealant between the 1st and 2nd section to fail? Or is that the 2nd & 3rd? No idea how long its been like this but the boiler was installed around 2010. My guess is this has been a long standing issue and that since the boiler is used for steam heat & hot water, it is running year round, the water was evaporating off the side of the boiler before leaking to the ground. So nobody noticed until work was being done in there recently and they shut off the boiler for a day to cool the room.

Looks like a fun fix.

Not a sealant leak it's a gasket leak (probably) I would pressure test the boiler

And I'll bet that when you open it up you'll find that the o-ring is twisted. Wouldn't be the first time.

That boiler looks like an H B Smith 28 series. For help and information you can call CS&E in Pittsburgh, Pa at 412-821-8900. Ask for the service dept or Tim Fugh. They were the distributor of these monsters and probably still are.

From the jacket colors, I'd say it's a Peerless.

@Steamhead is correct, it's a Peerless. Well so after a weekend of the boiler sitting off (and everyone without hot water), the boiler tech never showed on Monday. Another company came and said it was an easy fix. They've patched up that missing sealant and the boiler is running now. I don't know what they did...

Need to disassemble section, inspect seats, replace gaskets, tighten up with tork wrench to proper value, do hydrostatic test.

It sounds like you need to involve your neighbors-asking them if they have a place to go when this temporary repair lets go next December during a long -10 degree holiday weekend………
