How much water ‘bouce’ in the sightglass is acceptable?

Do you experienced steam guys have a guideline you use to determine if it’s time for a skim? My new boiler is humming along now after I skimmed and am getting about a half inch of bounce. Pre skim it was bouncing completely out of the gauge and triggering a low water shutdown. Burnham Independence IN-4.

It isn't just bouncing but how it bounces, Gently moving up and down is one thing. Violent bouncing is another.

    1/2" should be ok

    Some things to look for:
Water coming in the top gage glass connection
    violent bouncing
dirty water in the sight glass
Usually you will notice the burner tripping on low water cutoff
