And it's not just the silicone chip...

It's 3-1/2" supplies, 7 returns, hot water loops, about 10,000lbs, and the Patriots lose:

I remember when I quoted this job in April that I wanted it for the challenge...

I thought: "Whose going to do this one right besides me?"

But April turned to September and now the phone rings every 15 minutes because the weather finally turned, so one can hardly hold a wrench for the phone...

    Add in a hurricane, and:

-again, 4", 3-1/2 ", and 2-1/2" supplies, which means the Big Boy Threader, and 7 returns.

Slow arduous progress, but, -progress none-the-less...

There's still the hot water loop, VXT, electrical, and insulation.

One way or another I suppose, we'll get her done...

    Is it Spring yet?

    It's oil @Dave0176

    Beautiful work.

Be glad you're not down south. Even up here in the mountains of VA, we've had all kinds of flooding. I've never seen such a wet summer.

I'm curious: why did they stay with oil when there's gas already in the building?

  • When I started out you couldn't give gas away. Oil was the ticket. Now it's knee jerk that oil is bad, awful, rotten.

The pendulum swung. It will swing again.

True oil had a few price problems about 6 years ago. But that is done.

Gas in New England is about to have a much bigger price problem (supply vs demand) and don't say I didn't warn you (NIMBY).

    Add in:

    1. Oil is more efficient than gas

    2. Service: nobody is ever going to care about you as much your local oil company because their life blood depends on selling you oil.

    3. Lawrence, MA

Oil is good. It always has been, and it always will be. Especially in New England where it is prevalent.

It's nuts to discriminate or fear oil. Every customer is different. This one has an excellent relationship with his oil supplier, so why not take advantage of that extra layer of service, dependability, and efficiency?

The trick is to be equally comfortable, stocked, and versed in both fuels.

    Which of course we are...

I guess that depends on where you are. In the Baltimore area, no one wants oil at all. Those who still use it will convert as soon as they can. Pretty much every oil boiler replacement we do involves converting to gas.

It doesn't help that the four biggest oil suppliers in the area are all owned by the same company- Star Gas Partners. Service departments have been decimated. Our company has picked up a few oil boiler servicing accounts as a result, but all the owners want to switch. There may still be a few smaller companies that do a decent job, but we just keep hearing horror stories from customers.

Case in point, from back when I took a lot more pics than I do now:

Same here in NJ, no one wants oil. Even people who have perfectly good boilers want them replaced or a gas gun stuck in. To be honest I haven’t installed an oil fired boiler in ten years, lots of oil boilers have been ripped out and converted though.

Case in point, I installed a gas steam replacement in Jersey City a few years back where they had a waaay oversized gas boiler installed a month prior (long story short, contractor ended up getting sued because the heat just didn’t work, he installed an EG-65 where an EG-40 was all that was needed and did terrible near boiler piping)

Anyway upon initial fire up I noticed gas pressure very low ( it was February and it was cold) I had 3.5” supply and 2.7” manifold. Gas company came tried upping pressure to no avail, the next day they ripped up the street and replaced the gas main. Apparently they had gotten many calls that night and the rep told me too many people converted to gas at once and they weren’t ready. Supply is definitely going to be a problem in the older city’s.

In Newark NJ they’ve been replacing gas mains everywhere you look.

  • Well, oil in New England is alive and well. We have a few big monopoly-ist companies, but a great many mom and pop oil companies still operating every where. And obviously doing a good enough job to stay in business, -as there is plenty of competition.
