“If Nest made an air conditioner.....”

Anyone heard of this? I wonder if it’s a good idea for anyone to compare any product with the nest.—NBC

It's probably just as easy to hack one of those as a Nest or any other Wi-Fi thermostat. We advise against installing these, since a hacker can access the schedule, learn when you're away and break into the house.

It's a window unit that is grossly overpriced and protrudes out into the room way too much.

Of course, being it's designed like the Nest, it doesn't really give any useful information other than "you want this, it's pretty" and "oh, it's got wifi".

My biggest beefs with window units were leakage of both air and bugs, and poor condensate management. All of them attempt to sling water at the condenser to get rid of it, claiming it increases efficiency while all it really does is create a petri dish that is guaranteed to clog and overflow inside the house sooner or later. Every one I've ever owned I ended up drilling and modifying to get rid of condensate properly one way or another.

Since this is created for the "I can't do anything for my self" crowd I'm betting it's more of the same.

Not a rant at all, @ChrisJ -- I would add to it, and gladly -- it's a device intended for those who want the latest glitz, and have no clue as to how it works or why, or what to do with it when it doesn't. So, very like the Nest. I wish them the joy of it, and want no part of it...

    Also Dyson.
Take a vacuum, make it look fancy and have some dude with an accent advertise it and sell it for four times what it's actually worth.

5000 btu cooling, 480 running watts, and $400 to preorder...about the only useful info I found other than dimensions. No thanks, I’ll stick to my $200, 8000 btu window-rattler unit for the 19 days of summer we have around here

I like the fact that the home page is suppose to be about an air conditioner and how cool and comfy it will make your house, but the woman is up on the roof with a drink.
Maybe she's waiting for it to actually cool the room first.

I like the aesthetics of it but 5000 BTU only works in the bedrooms in my house. The only thing I don't like about the window shaker I have on the main floor is the noise. It would be nice if it was quieter but I imagine that's what a mini split is for
You can have it good, fast or cheap. Pick two

Notice the Duct Tape on the light plug on the roof top?

One advantage I can see from the video is the apparently sturdy construction of the side wings, in comparison to the flimsy plastic of the $200 models.
But is that enough to justify 2x the price?—NBC

They never showed the installer using screws to secure it to the window frame. Nor showed any screw heads after the initial install.
Did it imply no tools needed?
Pre drilling and installing 4 screws could be challenging to some and they might avoid the purchase.
    But it is really "cute".

Well you also have to own a drill and bits... :/

It's a different world now, things have changed dramatically over time.

We were just told we have to get our valuables out of our bank safe deposit box as our local branch is closing. So we thought we'd simply get a new safe deposit box in the next closest branch of the same bank (Capital One).... wrong!
It seems Capital One is getting out of the safe deposit box business... none of their branches can take new safe deposit box customers or even "refugees" from their own closing branches.
When I asked the new branch manager why.. .she said "the company is doing what the customers want... and they don't want safe deposit boxes any more". When I asked "where do they store their valuables like deeds, mortgage papers, wills, vehicle titles, etc.." she said all that stuff is replaceable nowadays so they just keep it at home. I asked "what about precious jewelry, heirloom pieces, etc..." she said "they don't have any of those things". Of course I couldn't ask about cash... but I'm sure she would have replied "they don't have any of that either".

A different world now..... can you imagine what things will be like in a hundred years? My wife is convinced cash will become extinct in our lifetime (she's 51)....

The CEO of our small family owned bank was telling me that deposit boxes had lost favor to the public. But recently more people want them. The reason being with past divorce rates high, there are now step children-step grandchildren-any multitude of ex spouses who may have access to the house.
So the papers and heirlooms go to the bank box for limited access. In the event of death of the key holder, some 3rd party official would be present for the opening.

Also, many of the next generations do not want "old" things from grandparents. They already have (always had) too many material items...none of it particularly worth saving.
Little or no appreciation for anything 100 years old, not realizing the history that may come with it.

@NY_Rob , that's the same Capital One that's known for predatory credit-card practices, right? If so, you just have to replace "customers" in the above response with "robber-baron CEOs".

Time to switch banks. Look into local credit unions- often their rates are more favorable than regular banks'.

    ^ agreed!

I already informed my wife we will not be rewarding them by keeping our accounts in their bank any longer. We have to vacate our safe deposit box by Sept 22nd... We already found a local bank with safe deposit boxes and will be moving all our accounts there by next week.

Capitol One has also turned over/sold our two Roth IRA's and two Coverdale college savings accounts to other companies over the last year or so. It looks like they just want to go with small mini-branches in supermarkets, etc... with minimum personnel and no services (like investments, safe deposit boxes, notary services, etc..) that can't be automated. It also looks like they don't want to own any physical property like buildings and grounds- they'd rather be a tenant in an existing building.
