    I don't even…

    No wait, what‽

    Oh, I see. It's a homemade hydraulic separator. I thought for a minute that…

I would've only stayed there long enough to take the pictures, making sure I didn't physically touch anything.

That is like the most bent pipe ever. This guy must have got a new pipe bender for Christmas, and had a ball! A welder too! So what came first boiler hang or pipe bending. lol

It's 2 stage, the old boiler fires as the second stage. he is also a good welder, look at the attempt at a closely spaced TEE. just remove the caps and get er done.

I keep thinking I have favorite mistake and then I look again. I think the condensate trap (or lack of) is the best. The vent is just too obvious.
That boiler is at least 8 years old, impressive!

Was a no heat call. Get there and display is 0-58. Tell him it’s a stat. He counters it’s a mercury style and they don’t go bad. I change stat, it starts right up. Took pics, noted illegal install, had him sign invoice stating install is illegal, left.

The DHW sensor is connected to the old dial aquastat. The third flex vent you see is the nat draft water heater, of course.

Perfect example of why DIY jobs should be particularly inspected. I realize lack of code enforcement in many parts of the country are lacking, but this install could easily be a tragedy when the flue gas eats through the vent.

Looking at it I wonder if that's actually an old radiant slab see on the top picture in the lower left those bent pipes go in the concrete by the way it looks. I'm guessing most of that ugly pipework was original.

I agree, there are defiantly some homeowners who know the right questions to ask and can do a better than average professional install. And the are plenty of trunk slammer "pros" who are just in it for a buck and do crap work.

Could save even more money by canceling his insurance. They won't pay off anyways.
