Pump flow rate

This has probably been discussed before, but is it ok to use a full port ball valve to throttle a circulator? For example, if I require a flow rate not exceeding 4 GPM, can I use a Taco 006 and throttle it? This circulator is between 0-10 GPM and I am thinking the only advantage to using a smaller pump like a 003 would be electricity if the pump is in continuous duty.

    I like the B&G Vario for that type of single zone?, fixed speed application. Really no need to throttle these small circs any more.

    With the Vario you get sleepless speed control, although it looks more like a 7 speed circulator. Plus the advantage of ECM motor technology.
