Hold My Beer Bro , I Got This

Saturday I go down to the basement to tune the burner. I figure I'll take some readings , adjust some air and draft , 2 hours tops messing around. I'm watching this thing ( Megasteam 396 new install ) and it's almost " sputtering " . The AFG sounds like a Riello that is sucking air every few seconds. So I pull the drawer and check stuff 1 more time , carefully place it back in , check retention head setting again. Start burner again , check breech draft 0.00 - 0.01 in. wc. , over fire .03 , stack is 300 - 320 sometimes , fuel is 180 psi. I look down at the burner and there is fuel coming from the bottom. I shut it down and lift the transformer , oil in the fan housing and not much in the gun.

I worked on burners back in the late 1980's when I had to. I could change a nozzle and a filter and be someones hero for the day but that was about it. Everything I worked on was 100 psi fuel pressure no more , no less ( Sunstrand A2VA-7116 ). I was amazed when I saw a Riello that ran at 140. So now I have a machine that works at 180 , I used a refrigeration gauge to set the pressure , my oil gauge stops at 150. The new pump is a 6527.

I looked over at the old burner from the V-75 boiler and it had a 7116 pump. I never noticed that it would go to 200 , like the one that is on the new burner . It would have been an easy swap except for the box mount on the new boiler left zero room for the solenoid. I called the only guy I know that would know what the heck I was talking about and he reminded me that the new primary sequence is different than what I worked on and that I had to use that valve. Bless you @Steamhead Frank for answering the phone , I was about to make a mess of things for sure. Anyway I was able to make it work by installing it upside down . I got real lucky with the nozzle line connection. Also I wanted to change the nozzle but did not have the right one. I changed the nozzle filter from another new nozzle , it seemed to help.



Today I removed the 2nd pass baffles and now have a solid 400 degree stack. I fired it up early and was glad to see that it was doing better ( in the end I think my problem may have been a loose door bolt ). I did a few slow skims and a complete dump or 2. While this was happening I remembered some No. 2's I bought from Ron Edwards in 2006 that I came across last week. I got drunk and put them in a box and forgot about them , but today was a great time to put them to good use. I did one last fire and man what a difference.







I have some more cleaning to do and being able to sweep all of the low pipe with fresh water helps.





But really I just went down to turn a few screws , lol good grief it took my whole weekend.
