Modernizing my heating system

Had a HVAC contractor stop by today to talk about central AC. After going back and forth he has me quite convinced it's time to rip out my steam system and modernize with a forced hot air system with AC. Best thing is he can start next week.

I think we all need to sit back and reflect on today's date.

Yes this is that date. I first looked at your little bio that you joined 6 years ago and have over 930 comments. Did you not grasp what everyone talks about or have some mental lapse?
Good shot though, it got Steamhead's attention.

My buddy and I went into the office last night and super glued all the pen and pencils to the bottom of the holders.

This is one of my wife's favorite days of the year, that's the only reason I was so aware of what day it is. She started on me before I was even dressed this morning....it's been a long day.

I worked for a well known maker of opamps in the early 70's. One nice early April day the coworker who occupied the bench opposite me went out to lunch (Friday so I knew he would have a couple of beers) while I went to work.

I strung a length of 1/8" tubing under my bench and his (benches were back to back) and waited for the victim to get back from lunch. About an hour after he got back I noticed his head begin to droop so I hooked up a can of freeze-it (freon in a spray can) and discharged it into the tubing. It took about 45 seconds but his eyes snapped open and he jumped back with a yell. His crotch was covered with a nice deep layer of frost.

His nickname in the lab was gentle Ben but after that he was known as Frosty. He was a bear of a man and as even tempered as I've ever known.

This was a LONG time ago- I'll just say we did it a little too well. One of the principal architects of this classic prank summarizes it here:

Back when I worked on HV power supplies we used FREON TF in open tubs to keep the arcing down. It really did as good a job as transformer oil and you could work on the assemblies after taking them out of the FREON bath, once something is coated with transformer oil your pretty much screwed.

This equipment was used in radar installations so reliability was job one, it could not fail. As long as they didn't drop it on a dock when off lloading from a ship it never failed - not one piece back in over 25 years.

All of this was before the ozone link was made, live and learn.

My first job out of college had buckets of both TC and TF under one of the benches, with step-on lid lifters. Right next to the extra large bucket of MEK. Just press your foot down, dip your board and let 'er rip.
