asbestos on steam pipes

B) I do not want to remove the asbestos on the pipes just to cover over it.

    You may not gave a choice. If WE touch it, in some Jurisdictions, we own it and have to have it properly removed. I think you can cover small amounts. Not 50 uncovered fittings, with the cloth hanging off.

    There's never enough time to do it right. Buy always time for someone else to do it over.

    I have had good success using plaster impregnated gauze -- the kind doctors use to make casts -- to wrap and encapsulate the asbestos. The gauze has to be wet, but not soggy, and two layers makes a nice tight encapsulation. I the asbestos is dry, it should be sprayed to moist.

    You do own the result; there's still asbestos under ther. This isn't remediation, but does eliminate the hazard unless someone has to work on the pipe. The property may not be salable without later remediation, but doing this doesn't make remediation any harder.

    If it's not crumbling, use some light canvas, or cheese cloth then coat it with Childers mastic 11, done deal, nicely encapsulated and will last a long time.

    The plaster cast trick is the best. Cheap and easy to find. And when you want to get it off, all you need is one of those Fein Tool osculating wonder tools that are the rage.

    If you've ever has a limb cast because of a broken bone, you know how slick they are.

    I've had more leg casts on than I care to think about.
