Where can I put the low pressure gauge?

My boiler has one of those required but useless 30PSI gauges. It has been in place for probably 30 years based on the age of the boiler and due to leverage issues, I don't think I can get it out.
Can I install a gauge anywhere on the mains? Is a pigtail (gauge siphon) the only precaution I need to take to protect the gauge from steam? Finally, is the orientation of the siphon important?

A low pressure gauge can be placed on the steam main or in parallel with the pressuretrol. The pigtail has to be oriented so it forms a trap that should be filled with water before putting the gauge on.
