    First Photo:

In the first photo, how many  here know why the electric water heater is in a closet above the floor?

In the second photo, I taught a lot of people to solder. I NEVER ever taught them to do it like that. (But I always and still use a Presto-Lite to solder. Much more flexibility with the tip and handle.)

    Closet

"In the first photo, how many  here know why the electric water heater is in a closet above the floor?"

Because it is in a garage?  Just a guess.
  • That's a

gas water heater and it's off the floor because code says fuel burning appliances have to be at least 18" off the floor to prevent ignition of volatile materials found in garages.......like gasoline and other solvents.

As far as the soldering goes, it looks like he's piping the relief valve line across the front of the water heater; not the end of the world, but not a good practice either. Also don't know why he had to install a coupling there next to the 45 bend, especially for a photo shoot.

Paul, I don't think these are the responses you were looking for. : )
    8.33 lbs./gal. x 60 min./hr. x 20°ΔT = 10,000 BTU's/hour

Two btu per sq ft for degree difference for a slab

    The message is...

we need more qualified plumbers. Craftsmanship is often ignored and the skillset of the trades has dramatically been reduced in the past ten years. This was predicted 20 years ago and it seems the chickens have come home to roost. At least the article makes the argument for good wages in the trade...if you're properly trained and know which end of the plunger is used.

    NYT

I'm in the country and have just recently signed up for the NYT on-line. It's been wonderful getting the news.

Ice, I agree on the Presto-lite. I figure one of the next class actions will be from Plumbers who have gone deaf with turbo-torches.

Alan, I just received the 2012 edition of 54 and was surprised to see that they allow an exclusion on the 18" lift requirement..."unless listed as flammable vapor ignition resistant." How long has that been in there and does that include all direct vent sealed combustion units as well? Tim?
