Check valve position

in THE MAIN WALL
I am installing a laundry tub pump for washing machine to drain into. I was wondering if the check valve can be installed horizontally or does it need to put vertically. All the instructions say is to install near to pump.

    but if you can't do that

    a regular swing check should -- in my view -- always be installed so that the flow through it is horizontal or upwards -- never downwards.
