Chimney top Icing

The chimney is a 35' SS lined semi exposed brick. The boiler is a Buderus G215 oil with the baffles removed, stack 585F. The flue pipe runs horizontal for 10' from the boiler to the chimney. The top of the chimney has a slate topper. The ice forms at the top. Any ideas how to prevent this?

    Move to Florida...

more seriously, so long as the icing does not completely close the vent (which is quite unlikely) it isn't a problem.  It is a phenomenon which is almost inevitable in very cold weather -- even without a long semi-exposed chimney.

I am no combustion man -- just a building super -- but I kind of wonder what has happened to the efficiency of your boiler with the baffles removed, and the combustion numbers...

    Baffled:

Is there a legitimate reason the baffles were removed?

    Why?

why tamper with the boiler? The certified instruction manual did not allow to remove the baffles and it also specified how to vent it!
