Or is it a beauty? Found this boiler wandering around the halls and chambers of the basement of an old Boston building.



This thing was a monster! Wish I'd had someone stand next to it for a sense of scale. I have to assume this is a conversion from coal? You can see the oil burner in the center bottom of the first picture; the sight glass was behind the metal door on the right side. You can see the brass pigtails of the pressuretrols in the upper right. Why would it have three presuretrols linked in series like that? Pressure on the one I could easily see read cut in around 7 psi....

    It's definitely coal-converted

    the burner is a Carlin, maybe a 701CRD. One pressuretrol is to operate the low-hi-low mechanism, one is the operating high limit, and the third should be a manual-reset unit that would trip if the others fail.

    hasn't been dead for long

    it looks like the pressuretrol piping/pigtails are still shiny, so it may only have been recently [5 years?] put to rest. i wonder why.--nbc
