How much would a 1" diameter, 10 foot long iron steam pipe expand from room temperature to 212 degrees?

    How accurate

of an answer do you need?  Off the cuff, I would say "about one half inch"  If you need something more accurate than that, you need to provide more parameters.  Research: "linear thermal expansion of various pipes"

    at least 1/4"

i don't know exactlyhow far that pipe will expand but I can tell you that a 2" steam main that circles my chimney (about 12 ft long) expands about 1/4" and perhaps a bit more. When cold, the main vent is touching a cold water pipe but when it's full of steam that 2" iron pipe is 1/4" away from the vent.

    From 70 to 212 in 60 seconds....

    About 1/8th of an inch.
