Low Pressure Water Boiler Cleaning

I'm repairing/restoring a 50 year young residential oil fired boiler.  There is quite a bit of sediment, mineral deposits, sludge on the waterside.  It's a cast iron, vertical tube single pass heat exchanger.  I was planning to pump in TSP in solution, then  heat and soak in overnight.  The commercially available cleaners are just a bit too gentle.  Any thoughts?  Thankx.

    What kind of heat do you have ?

    If it's mostly copper , the mild boiler cleaner will be more than adequate .



    Even if you have old cast iron rads and large diameter steel piping , you really don't need to clean the system with anything stronger . Unless it was leaking for a long time . Most of the crud works it's way back to the boiler and stays there . So once you change it out that's most of the battle .



    I like to use Stewart Hall 8-Way boiler treatment . Comes with every System 2000 we install . Purge the system a little , let it heat up and circulate then do a full purge and it's set .
