I 'd like to know if there is an outdoor reset for steam heating systems and why not.

    the closest....

thing would be a Tekmar 279....

  • Yes, there has.....

been in the past.  In the 1940's Warren Webster had such a system.  At this time, I am part of a group in Chicago that is beginning to pursue this concept (among others) and are currently looking for support and test sites.  It looks quite feasible for many (most) two pipe systems to be converted to outdoor reset and we are also looking at one pipe.  The engineers are already designing the software and hardware to control the burner on the boiler.

We are scheduled to publish next fall with at least some preliminary results,  hopefully more extensive concrete info will be available after that.

Tis an exciting time in the world of steam heat!!!!!!

    Almost

With steam you cant reset water temp, it wont boil.

There are controls to change cycle times or control valves though.

    Steam reset

Heat timer or Tekmar have them, resets with length of cycles based on outdoor temp and return sensing. Been around quite a while. Good luck

    Steam reset

We use custom designed controls that have the following sensors:

    outdoor

    indoor space

    header pressure

    return line temperature

We vary the pressure and on time according to outdoor temperature while making sure that the space temperature does not get cold or over heat. One building with two towers that never had equal heat, now has even temperatures. The first problem corrected was lowering the maximum pressure to 2 psi from 12 psi. The control panel that we installed controlled two Bryan 5,000,000 BTU 5 to 1 modulating boilers. Actual natural gas savings were 35%. We did the same at another building with the same owner but with 4,500,000 BTU each. The same savings of 35% were recorded.
  • I was not talking about timer type resets, but

steam pressure reset controls.  These vary steam pressure according to outdoor temperature, allowing radiators to have a continuous supply of steam throughout most of the heating season, but in varying amounts.  This allows modulating partial heating of the radiators so heat output at each radiator can be proportionally controlled by outdoor temperature.  Very, very similiar to hot water outdoor reset.  This type of reset should be able to be retrofitted to almost all two pipe systems and and we hope to be researching if the same concepts can be applied to a specially tuned one pipe system.
