I recently got a quote from a contractor to replace my old boiler. He recommended the HB Smith 8 Series. Does anyone know if this model is any good?

    I have used....

Smith 8 series boiler for years... both in steam and hot water applications. I have never had an issue and if there were any I know the factory rep. will be right there.

I especially like it for steam. kpc

    I like them.

The boiler is seldom the issue with an installation. Like Cezar says " It is seldom the dog , but the owner that is the issue." The boilers can be great and the install is bad, Today I saw a mega Steam by burnham installed by a competitor that had no main vents. It also had the dry returns tied together then dropped to the return at the hartford loop. They also used an iron circulator to the indirect heater with no bypass for temperature control of the water going through the circulator. also no provision was made to flush the wye strainer, that I was shocked to see they remembered. The new boiler is not saving the homeowner much on their oil bill compared to their old 1970's boiler. If you can not tell seeing good boilers installed poorly gets me steamed, in a bad way.
Cost is what you spend , value is what you get.
