Replace or repair 15y/o furnace?

We have a 15 year old Payne 90-percent condensing gas furnace. The secondary heat exchanger has gone out due to corrosion (being installed at an incorrect angle), and although the part is under warranty, it will cost us big bucks for the service to replace it.

Our service guy is pushing us to go ahead and buy a new furnace based on its age and the typical lifespan he's seen with these models, but that will run us about 3 times the cost of just replacing the heat exchanger. It seems like there's a good chance we could get more years out of it based on the general lifespan of furnaces quoted on the internets. We have been in the house 4 years and have had no problems with it. Opinions? Suggestions?

Thanks!

    I'd say....

replace furnace. The average age of a furnace is widely considered to be18 yrs old and you're near the end of that. You can get a much better furnace these days with 2 stage or modulating gas valves, variable blowers and great warranties. Also with the federal tax credits and possibly local utility company rebates, now is a good time

you might want to repair it.....

carrier corp settled a class action suit a few years ago which MAY apply to you.

it's possible that,as part of the settlement, you are eligible for parts AND labor

coverage. you may elect to not fix it,but receive a $1250 credit on the purchase

of of new carrier equipment. (carrier is the mother compnay of Payne.) contact your  local payne dealer
